Paul Skenes Is Pitching To The Best Offense In Baseball, And The Ticket Is The Cubs Team Total Under

Five plays across two sports today, and the one worth arguing about first is the smallest sounding of them. Chicago has scored more runs than any team in baseball this season. The ticket is the Cubs team total under 4.5. That is not a contradiction, it is a starting pitcher.

11.5 units to win, 18.56 at risk. Every price is a minus number, so every unit figure is what gets won rather than what gets put up. As a group the card needs 61.74 percent, and it is worth knowing up front that one ticket is carrying almost half the money.

Look at the risk column rather than the to win column and the card changes shape completely. Pittsburgh is 3 units to win and 8.4 units at risk, which is 45 percent of everything on this page riding on a Group of Five visitor being what last Saturday said they were. That is addressed below, honestly, and it is the part of the card that deserves the most doubt.

The Cubs Team Total Under: Betting Against The Best Offense In Baseball

Start with the thing that looks wrong. Chicago has scored 792 runs this season, more than any other club in Major League Baseball, at 5.35 a game with a .771 OPS and 204 home runs. No team on the board tonight hits like this one, and the ticket is their team total under 4.5.

Here is the other half of it.

2026 seasonPaul Skenes, PITClay Holmes, CHC
Starts2915
Innings155.086.0
ERA3.832.83
WHIP1.151.12
Strikeouts18165
Strikeouts per nine10.516.80
Walks per nine2.613.14

A 3.83 ERA is not what people expect next to the name, and it should be said plainly rather than hidden. The number that matters more for a team total is the distribution underneath it. Skenes has allowed three runs or fewer in 20 of his 29 starts, and two or fewer in 16 of them. A 3.83 built that way is a pitcher who is mostly excellent and occasionally blown up, and a team total under is a bet on the mostly, priced at -118.

He has also already seen this lineup twice. On May 28 he threw 5.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and Chicago scored 3. On July 25 he threw 5.1 again with 11 strikeouts and Chicago scored 5. Twenty one strikeouts in 10.2 innings against them, one game under this number and one over. That is not a trend, it is two data points, and anyone selling it as a trend is selling something.

The season shape is the better argument. For all the scoring, the Cubs have been held to four runs or fewer in 68 of their 148 games, 45.9 percent. A -118 price asks for 54.13. So the ticket is paying about eight points of edge for the difference between a league average starter and one who misses ten and a half bats per nine innings, in a game Chicago will see for the third time this year.

Pittsburgh -280: The Ticket That Owns The Card

This is the leg carrying the most money and the least information, and both of those things are true at the same time.

Pittsburgh is 1-0. So is UCF. Here is the entire body of 2026 evidence on the two of them:

Week oneResultOpponent
Pittsburgh PanthersWon 59-14Miami of Ohio
UCF KnightsWon 73-6Bethune Cookman

UCF put 73 points on the board and the number still moved to Pittsburgh by a touchdown. That tells you the market is grading opponents rather than scoreboards, which is the correct way to grade a week one blowout of an FCS program. It does not make the price cheap.

Acrisure Stadium, 3:30 eastern, 84 degrees and cloudy. Pittsburgh is at home, Pittsburgh is the Power Four side, and a 59 point opener against a MAC opponent at least says the offense functions. The rest of the case is the badge on the helmet, and at -280 the badge is being asked to carry 8.4 units.

The counter is straightforward and it is not small: a team that scored 73 points last week is not a team you can assume rolls over, September road games between conferences are where favorites get embarrassed every single year, and neither of these clubs has faced anybody with a pulse. This is the ticket on the card most likely to be remembered badly.

Arizona +7 In Provo: Two Teams Who Have Played Nobody

LaVell Edwards Stadium, 3:30 eastern, 87 degrees and mostly sunny. A conference game with both teams at 1-0 and both openers useless:

Week oneResultOpponent
BYU CougarsWon 63-7Utah Tech
Arizona WildcatsWon 35-7Northern Arizona

BYU scored 63 and Arizona scored 35, and the market has turned that gap into seven points plus home field in Provo. The play is not an argument that Arizona is better. It is an argument that a touchdown is a large number to build out of one game against Utah Tech and one game against Northern Arizona.

The price says the same thing. Arizona +7 is available at -108, which asks for 51.92 percent, barely more than a coin. That is the cheapest ticket on the card and it is sized at 3 units because the number, not the team, is the thing being bet.

What argues the other way: Provo in September is a genuinely hard road trip, altitude and heat and a crowd, and BYU covering a touchdown at home against a middling conference opponent is an ordinary Saturday, not an upset.

The Yankees At -157 Behind Gerrit Cole

Yankee Stadium, 1:35 eastern, and this is the most conventional ticket on the page.

2026 seasonGerrit Cole, NYYZac Thornton, NYM
Starts1912
Innings111.066.1
ERA3.413.53
WHIP1.091.19
Strikeouts per nine9.166.92
Walks per nine1.782.04

The ERA gap is a tenth of a run and means very little. The strikeout gap is 9.16 against 6.92 and means a great deal, because it is the difference between a pitcher who can end an inning by himself and one who needs his defense to do it.

New York's staff carries a 3.20 ERA, the best of any club on this card, and the Mets have been held to four runs or fewer in 95 of their 147 games, 64.6 percent. The Yankees score 4.58 a game against the Mets' 4.29. Cole has allowed three runs or fewer in 15 of his 19 starts.

None of that is exotic. It is a better rotation and a better bullpen at home against a division rival with a thinner lineup, priced at -157, which needs 61.09 percent. It is the smallest ticket on the card at 1.5 units for exactly that reason: the edge is real and it is not large.

The Under 9.5 In Sacramento, Where Unders Go To Die

This one needs the uncomfortable number first, because leaving it out would be dishonest.

Athletics home games in Sacramento have gone over 9.5 total runs 46 times in 73 tries this season, 63 percent, at an average of 11.66 runs a game. Sutter Health Park is the friendliest hitting environment in the league and it is not close. Taking an under 9.5 there is swimming upstream and the ticket should be understood that way.

What is on the other side of it is the two lineups.

2026 offenseSeattle MarinersAthletics
Runs586647
Runs per game3.964.37
Team OPS.683.723
Held to four or fewer92 of 14881 of 148

Seattle has scored 586 runs, the fewest of any team in Major League Baseball, and has been held to four or fewer in 62.2 percent of its games. The Athletics are 19th at 4.37. Two offenses that both sit below the league line have to combine for ten in a nine inning game.

Bryan Woo starts for Seattle with a 4.03 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, 9.10 strikeouts per nine and only 1.90 walks per nine, and he averages 5.76 innings a start, the deepest of any starter on this card. He has held opponents to three runs or fewer in 17 of 27 starts.

Gage Jump is the reason this is 2 units and not 3. A 5.12 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP and 4.19 walks per nine is an under pitcher for nobody, and the Athletics staff behind him carries a 5.33 team ERA. The ticket is Woo plus two weak lineups against a ballpark and a starter who both argue the other way. That is a real fight, at -110, and the number is the only reason it is on the card at all.

The Argument Against This Card

The money is in the wrong place. Pittsburgh risks 8.4 units, more than the other four legs combined, on the leg supported by the least evidence. Two week one blowouts of overmatched opponents is not a basis for laying that kind of price, and if this card loses money today that is almost certainly the reason.

Both college games are being bet on ignorance, which cuts both ways. The argument for Arizona +7 is that nobody knows anything yet. That same sentence is the argument against Pittsburgh -280, and the card is holding both at once.

The under 9.5 is fighting the park. Sixty three percent of Athletics home games have gone over this number. No amount of lineup analysis erases a sample that large, and Gage Jump walking 4.19 men per nine is exactly how a slow game turns into a nine run inning.

The Cubs have hit 204 home runs. A team total under against a club that lives on the long ball only needs one swing with traffic on base, and Chicago has already gone over four runs in five of its last ten games, including a 12 run night.

Bottom Line

The best ticket on this page is the one that reads worst on a graphic. The Cubs lead baseball in runs and the play is their team total under, because for a single afternoon the starter matters more than the season average, and Paul Skenes has held teams to three or fewer in 20 of 29 tries.

The most expensive ticket is Pittsburgh, and it is expensive in the way that actually costs money: 8.4 units at risk to win 3, on one Saturday of evidence against an opponent nobody can evaluate yet.

Five plays, 11.5 units to win, 18.56 at risk, 61.74 percent to break even. All five were on the verified record with their prices before the games started, and all five get graded there whether they win or lose.

Card FAQ

What are the BetLegend plays for Saturday September 12?

Five. Pittsburgh Panthers moneyline at -280 for 3 units, Arizona Wildcats +7 at -108 for 3 units, Chicago Cubs team total under 4.5 at -118 for 2 units, Athletics and Mariners under 9.5 at -110 for 2 units, and New York Yankees moneyline at -157 for 1.5 units.

How much is the card risking?

Every price on it is a minus number, so every unit figure is the amount being won rather than the amount put up. The card wins 11.5 units and risks 18.56. It needs 61.74 percent as a group just to stay even, and most of that is one ticket.

Which leg is the most expensive?

Pittsburgh at -280 by a wide margin. That one ticket risks 8.4 units to win 3, which is 45 percent of the money on the card, and it needs 73.68 percent on its own. Arizona +7 at -108 needs 51.92, the Athletics and Mariners under 9.5 at -110 needs 52.38, the Cubs team total at -118 needs 54.13 and the Yankees at -157 need 61.09.

Why bet the under on the best offense in baseball?

Because of who is pitching. Chicago leads the majors with 792 runs and 5.35 a game, and the Cubs have still been held to four or fewer in 68 of 148 games. Paul Skenes has allowed three runs or fewer in 20 of his 29 starts with a 3.83 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and 10.51 strikeouts per nine. A team total under is a bet on the starter, not on the season average.

Has Skenes faced the Cubs this season?

Twice. On May 28 he went 5.1 innings and struck out 10 while Chicago scored 3. On July 25 he went 5.1 again and struck out 11, and Chicago scored 5. That is 21 strikeouts in 10.2 innings against them, one game under this number and one game over it. Neither result settles anything and both belong on the page.

What is the strongest argument against the Cubs team total under?

Skenes averages 5.25 innings a start, so nearly four innings of this game belong to a Pittsburgh bullpen attached to a 4.18 staff ERA, and Chicago has hit 204 home runs. The Cubs have gone over four runs in five of their last ten games, including a 12 run night. One swing with traffic on base beats this ticket.

Why is Pittsburgh worth -280?

It is the price of a Power Four home team against a Group of Five visitor, and it is the price the card is least comfortable with. Pittsburgh opened with 59 points against Miami of Ohio. UCF opened with 73 against Bethune Cookman. Neither result means much, which is the honest problem with laying 8.4 units on it.

Why Arizona +7 and not the Arizona moneyline?

Because BYU at home in Provo is a real edge and the card is not arguing otherwise. It is arguing about seven points. Both teams are 1-0 and both beat an overmatched opponent, BYU 63-7 over Utah Tech and Arizona 35-7 over Northern Arizona, so the number is built on almost nothing and a touchdown is a lot to give in a conference game.

Where can these plays be verified?

All five were posted with their prices and unit sizes before kickoff and first pitch on the verified BetLegend record at trustmyrecord.com, and they are graded there afterwards whether they win or lose.
