Pittsburgh Scored 12 Points Last Week And Is Laying 10.5, And Detroit Ran For 165 Yards In Its Opener

Pittsburgh won a football game 12 to 7 last Friday. That was the whole night, a field goal fest against UCF in which the Panthers crossed the goal line once. Tonight that same team is laying 10.5 points at home against a Syracuse club that lost by three. I'll take the points, and I'll take Detroit's points too, because Buffalo just gave up 31 to Houston and the Lions ran for 165 yards in their opener.

3 plays, 7 units to win, 10.85 at risk. Syracuse and Pitt kick at 4:30 Pacific, Detroit and Buffalo at 5:15.

Two of these are flat 10 cent numbers where the unit figure is close to the risk. The third one isn't. Laying -215 on a team total means the Lions have to reach 21 points a little better than two times in three before the ticket shows a profit, and that's the one that deserves the most explaining. It gets its own section below.

Syracuse +10.5: Pitt's Offense Went Quiet Against UCF

Both of these teams have played exactly two games, and both scoreboards tell you almost nothing until you separate them. Syracuse beat New Hampshire 66 to 3, then lost 21 to 18 at home to Cal. Pittsburgh beat Miami of Ohio 59 to 14, then beat UCF 12 to 7. Same shape, two blowouts of nobody and then a one score game against a real opponent, and in that real game the Orange lost by three while the Panthers won by five.

Rushing yards per game178.5134.5
Points allowed per game12.010.5

Look at the yardage rows. There's almost nothing between these teams, five yards a game on offense and forty on defense, and the market is asking for ten and a half. A double digit spread between two teams with the same profile usually comes from the record, and the record here is doing more work than the play deserves.

Steve Angeli has thrown for 570 yards and 4 touchdowns with 3 interceptions on 79 attempts, and Umari Hatcher already has 14 catches for 224 yards and 2 scores. Tylik Hill is averaging better than 8 yards a carry on 18 attempts. That's a functioning offense against a Cal defense that gave it 18 points, and it's the same offense that put 66 on the board in the opener.

Pittsburgh's own quarterback has been better, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Mason Heintschel is 49 of 70 for 665 yards and 7 touchdowns, and Cataurus Hicks has 178 receiving yards. But the UCF game is on the tape too, and on that night the Panthers managed twelve points at home. A team that just did that is not a comfortable double digit favorite against a conference opponent with a live quarterback.

Lions +5.5: Two 1 And 0 Teams, One Short Number

Detroit beat New Orleans 31 to 30 at Ford Field. Buffalo beat Houston 36 to 31. Both are 1 and 0, both won a shootout, and tonight one of them is laying almost a touchdown to the other.

Buffalo's win was a Josh Allen game, 20 of 29 for 334 yards and 2 touchdowns with Dalton Kincaid going for 130. Nobody is arguing the Bills can't score. The question is the other half of the box score, and the Bills gave up 31 points and 124 rushing yards to a Houston team that is not built to do that.

Detroit's week 1 was the mirror image. Jahmyr Gibbs carried 29 times for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns, Jared Goff was efficient rather than spectacular at 26 of 39 for 206 and 2 scores, and Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 10 balls with 2 touchdowns. The Lions won that game on the ground and at the goal line, which is the profile that travels best into a hostile building.

The defensive number in that table is the one that keeps me off Buffalo at this price. Detroit gave up 501 yards to the Saints, 410 of them through the air, and still won. That's a bad defensive afternoon and a one point margin, and the market has treated it as evidence the Lions are a fraud. Same week, Buffalo allowed 398 and won by five. The gap in those two performances is not five and a half points wide.

Detroit Team Total Over 20.5: Gibbs And A Buffalo Run Defense That Leaked

This is the biggest ticket on the card and the shortest price, so here's the case in plain numbers. The Lions scored 31 in week 1. The game total tonight is 54.5 with Buffalo favored by 5.5, which prices Detroit at roughly 24 and a half points before anybody touches the ball. The number being asked for is 21.

Gibbs is the reason I like it more than the implied total does. He ran 29 times for 156 yards against New Orleans, and Buffalo just gave up 124 rushing yards to Houston. A back with that volume is a red zone certainty rather than a hope, and Detroit reached the end zone four times in the opener.

The way this ticket loses is a Lions offense that gets stuck at 20, which means two touchdowns and two field goals, or three touchdowns and nothing else with a failed conversion. That happens, and at -215 it doesn't have to happen often to hurt. But Detroit put up 31 in week 1 against a Saints defense that held up better than Buffalo's did on the same weekend, and the one part of the Buffalo front that could change this math is Greg Rousseau, who had 2 sacks against Houston.

The Argument Against This Card

Syracuse turned it over three times in two games, all three by Angeli, and Pittsburgh's defense is allowing 10.5 points a game. If this is the night the Orange give it away twice on the road, the 10.5 disappears in a hurry and Heintschel is more than good enough to turn that into a three score night.

Josh Allen at home is the reason Buffalo is favored. The Bills scored 36 in week 1 and they've spent years making 5.5 point spreads look small. Detroit's defense just gave up 410 passing yards, and if that number repeats against this quarterback, both Lions tickets are in trouble at the same time, which is the real risk of stacking a side and a team total in the same game.

Laying -215 anywhere is expensive. The Detroit team total needs to hit better than 68 percent of the time to be worth it, and one slow start turns a winning read into a losing ticket.

Card FAQ

What are the BetLegend plays for Thursday September 17?

Three football plays. Syracuse +10.5 at Pittsburgh at -110 for 1.5 units, Detroit Lions +5.5 at Buffalo at -110 for 2.5 units, and the Detroit Lions team total over 20.5 at -215 for 3 units.

How much is the card risking?

Every price is laying juice, so the unit figures are the amount being won. The card is 7 units to win and 10.85 units at risk.

Why take Syracuse +10.5 at Pittsburgh?

Pittsburgh won 12 to 7 against UCF last week, and the two teams are separated by five yards a game on offense and forty yards a game on defense. Syracuse lost its only game against a real opponent by three, and Steve Angeli has 570 passing yards with 4 touchdowns through two games.

Why the Detroit Lions +5.5 and the team total over 20.5?

Both teams are 1 and 0 off shootout wins. Buffalo allowed 31 points and 124 rushing yards to Houston, Jahmyr Gibbs ran 29 times for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns in Detroit's opener, and the Lions scored 31 in that game. A 54.5 total with Buffalo laying 5.5 prices Detroit near 24 and a half points, so the 20.5 is asking for less than the market itself implies.
