There is a personal storyline running through this one: Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage takes on his former club Lens for the first time since leaving, in a Como Cup group stage with an unusual format, each side plays two 45-minute matches, with any draws settled by penalty shootout rather than extra time. Palace are looking to bounce back after a loss in their last outing, while Lens are trying to protect an unbeaten preseason record.

Lens brings real attacking quality to Lake Como in Florian Thauvin and Thorgan Hazard, two experienced forwards who represent the toughest defensive test Palace will have faced so far this preseason. For a Sage side still finding its identity heading into the new campaign, containing that pair for a full 90 minutes across two halves of competitive intensity will say more about where this Palace team stands than the eventual scoreline.

The picturesque Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium setting aside, both clubs are using the Como Cup format's split-match structure to get extended runouts for squad players who might not see 90 minutes in a traditional friendly, which should mean rotation through both 45-minute periods and a wider look at each roster than a single result would suggest.
