Two Units On A Cornfield Slugfest And The Quietest Lineup DeGrom Could Ask For

Major League Baseball carved a diamond out of an Iowa cornfield again, and it handed the first pitch there to a man who has allowed 29 home runs.

Aaron Nola starts the third MLB at Field of Dreams game tonight in Dyersville, the first one played since the Cubs beat the Reds on that field in 2022. His season reads 3-9 with a 5.47 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP, and opponents are hitting .279 against him. The first time big leaguers played in the corn, in 2021, the White Sox and Yankees combined for seventeen runs and eight home runs and Tim Anderson ended it with a walk-off shot into the stalks. Tonight that stage gets the most homer-prone starter the Phillies could have sent.

Half the card lives in Iowa. The other half waits until 10:07 ET in Anaheim, where Jacob deGrom draws a Los Angeles Angels lineup hitting .235 as a team with 1,144 strikeouts. Two plays, two units, and the honest case against both is written below the number on each one.

Angels Team Total Under 3.5: DeGrom Against A Lineup That Keeps Landing On Three

Start with what the Angels have actually scored, night by night, over their last ten games: three, one, two, four, four, zero, three, one, three, five. That is three runs or fewer in seven of ten, from a club that sits 47-74 and averages 4.07 runs a game for the season. The team batting average is .235, the OPS is .686, and the lineup has struck out 1,144 times. Mike Trout is still in the middle of it with 20 home runs and an .833 OPS, and after him the thump thins out fast. Zach Neto has 20 home runs with a .224 average, and Anthony Rendon and Yoan Moncada are both parked on the sixty-day injured list.

Jacob deGrom is the wrong man to see when the bats are this quiet. He is 8-7 with a 3.87 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 118.2 innings, holding hitters to a .229 average across 22 starts. His last time out, August 8 against Baltimore, he threw five innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts and a single walk. He has already faced this Angels lineup once this season, on July 7, and gave Texas five innings with two earned runs and seven strikeouts.

Now the part that keeps this at a unit and a half instead of more. DeGrom's season has two gears, and the bad one has shown up twice inside his last four starts: five earned runs in four and two-thirds against the White Sox on July 20, then five earned in three and a third against Houston on August 1 with five walks. When the command drifts, it drifts hard, and a three-and-a-third-inning start hands the last five innings to a Texas bullpen working without Nathan Eovaldi and Jakob Junis, both on the fifteen-day injured list, with Jack Leiter and Robert Garcia out longer than that. The Angels have also won two straight, 3-2 over the Dodgers and 5-2 on Wednesday, and a team total under at -140 needs to cash 58.3 percent of the time. The bet is that seven quiet nights out of ten is the real Angels, and that the deGrom who showed up in Baltimore is the one who gets off the plane in Anaheim.

Phillies And Twins Over 8.5: Runs In The Corn

The Field of Dreams game returns tonight for the first time in four years, streaming on Netflix with a 7:30 ET first pitch, and the pitching matchup leans toward the version of this event everybody remembers. Free passes plus a Philadelphia lineup carrying 149 home runs is a live combination: Kyle Schwarber has 35 of them with a .903 OPS, Bryce Harper has 25 with 71 RBI, and Luis Arraez is hitting .313 in front of them. Bradley has allowed exactly three earned runs in two of his last three starts, fine work, but he walked four Mariners on August 2 and two more Brewers on August 8. Minnesota is also patching a rotation with Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez and David Festa all on the injured list, which means the innings after Bradley belong to a staff holding a 4.60 ERA, second-worst of any team playing tonight's late games.

Half a unit is the size here because the 2022 box score is sitting right there. The last time MLB played in Dyersville, the Cubs beat the Reds 4-2, six total runs, and Drew Smyly struck out nine over five innings. The corn has produced one shootout and one pitching duel. The Angels under dies one of two ways. Either deGrom has the short, walk-filled night he has already had twice in the last four turns and the Angels feast on a stripped Texas bullpen, or Trout and Neto simply run into two mistakes each in a park where both have done it before. Seven of ten quiet games is a pattern, and patterns lose to one bad inning all the time. The two-game winning streak is small, but it is also the Angels' loudest stretch since the first week of August.

Over in Iowa, the plainer enemy is the Philadelphia lineup that just scored one run in two days. Bradley is genuinely good when he is around the plate, Nola has strung together respectable starts before, and a novelty park proved in 2022 that it can host a 4-2 game as easily as a 9-8 one. Half a unit is the honest size for a bet built on one bad starter, one wild one, and a memory of eight balls flying into the corn.

Two positions, two units, both leaning on the same idea from opposite directions: run environments follow the starting pitching more than the occasion. In Anaheim the arm is elite and the bats are not. In Iowa the arms are shaky and the bats, at least on paper, are loaded.
