The number worth staring at tonight belongs to Max Fried, and it is a one. One home run allowed, in 61.2 innings across ten starts, alongside a 3.21 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP and a .199 opponent average. Pitchers with that kind of contact suppression usually get there by missing bats. Fried gets there by never showing the same thing twice.

His usage chart is nearly flat. A cutter 22.4 percent of the time at 92.0 mph, a sinker at 22.1 percent and 93.1, a four-seamer at 16.8 percent and 94.7, a curveball at 14.2 percent and 73.9, a changeup at 13.7 percent and 85.5, and a sweeper at 9.8 percent and 79.9. Six offerings across a twenty-one mile per hour range, none of them a primary pitch. There is nothing to sit on.

Pittsburgh arrives with the loudest offense on this board, 543 runs and 5.32 per game, but the shape is the catch. The Pirates hit .265 with a .785 OPS against right-handers and .254 with a .723 OPS against left-handers, and they are .276 with an .812 OPS at PNC Park against .249 and .723 on the road. Both of those splits point the wrong way tonight. Their answer is Bubba Chandler, whose 98.5 mph four-seamer accounts for 47.9 percent of his pitches and whose 55 walks in 94.1 innings explain a 4.77 ERA and a 3-8 record. New York has hit 147 team home runs, the most in baseball, 75 of them in this ballpark.

Orioles @ Red Sox

Boston has not lost a baseball game in three weeks. The streak reached fifteen this afternoon and the Red Sox are 52-48, six games behind Tampa Bay in the American League East and 10-0 across their last ten. Willson Contreras has been the engine, hitting .292 with a .941 OPS and 22 home runs, with Wilyer Abreu at .792 and Ceddanne Rafaela at .768 behind him.

Baltimore's task in the nightcap falls to Kyle Bradish, the most durable arm on the Orioles staff at 19 starts and 107.1 innings with a 3.61 ERA and 106 strikeouts. He is a four-pitch right-hander built around a sinker at 33.8 percent and 94.7 mph, a slider at 26.7 percent and 87.4, and a curveball at 22.0 percent and 84.7. His one persistent flaw is 50 walks, a rate of 4.19 per nine, and Fenway Park does not forgive free passes.

Boston counters with Eduardo Rivera, a left-hander with two big-league starts and 9.1 innings on his record, a 2.89 ERA and a .156 opponent average in a sample far too small to mean anything. He is essentially a two-pitch arm, a four-seamer 59.8 percent of the time at 95.3 mph and a slider at 26.0 percent and 87.9. Baltimore, meanwhile, is not a bad club playing badly: the Orioles are 7-3 in their last ten and have hit 121 team home runs. What has undone them is a 4.23 staff ERA and 484 runs allowed, more than they have scored.

Tonight's Featured Game is the series finale between the best record in baseball and the team that beat it 10-7 on Monday before losing 2-1 on Tuesday. Los Angeles is 64-38 with a plus-153 run differential, the largest in the major leagues. Philadelphia is 56-46 and three games behind Atlanta in the National League East.

The reason the total sits at 9.5 rather than 8 is Aaron Nola. Philadelphia's right-hander has a 5.68 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP over 103 innings with 23 home runs allowed, the most of any starter on this board by a comfortable margin. The strikeout stuff is still there, 108 punchouts and 9.44 per nine, and his knuckle curve remains his most-used pitch at 34.3 percent and 78.2 mph. The command inside the zone is what has gone.

Los Angeles counters with Eric Lauer, a left-hander with his own home run problem: 18 allowed in 76.2 innings against a 4.81 ERA and only 47 strikeouts, a rate of 5.52 per nine. Two starters who give up the long ball, in a ballpark that rewards it, with a Dodgers lineup that has scored 526 runs at 5.16 per game and a Phillies club carrying Kyle Schwarber and his 33 home runs. The full breakdown, with arsenals, keys and market context, is on the Featured Game page.

Twins @ Guardians

Minnesota has lost four in a row and two of them happened here, 13-4 on Monday and 5-2 on Tuesday. The Twins are 49-53 with a minus-36 run differential and 23-28 away from Target Field. Cleveland is 54-48, a game and a half out in the American League Central, and has won two straight.

The gap between these clubs is entirely on the pitching side of the ledger. Cleveland's staff has a 3.73 ERA and has allowed 410 runs. Minnesota's has a 4.75 ERA and has allowed 521, and the road number is far worse: a 5.33 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP away from home against 4.21 and 1.32 in Minneapolis. The Twins are the only club on tonight's board allowing more than five runs per nine on the road.

Bailey Ober takes the ball for Minnesota with a 4.32 ERA and an unusual profile for a right-hander: his changeup is his most-used pitch at 36.1 percent and 82.9 mph, ahead of a four-seamer thrown 31.7 percent of the time at just 88.4 mph. The soft velocity has cost him, 13 home runs in 77 innings. Cleveland's Slade Cecconi is not obviously better on paper, a 4.55 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP and a .281 opponent average, but the Guardians are 27-24 at home with a 3.60 home staff ERA and the bullpen behind him has been the difference all year.

Game 5

Rays @ Blue Jays

Tampa Bay has outscored Toronto 19-3 in two nights, winning 7-1 on Monday and 12-2 on Tuesday, and the Rays remain the best team in the American League East at 58-42. Toronto is 46-55, twelve and a half games back, and has lost three in a row.

The Blue Jays' problem is the same one they have carried since April. They have scored 400 runs in 101 games, an average of 3.96, the fewest in the major leagues, and their .683 team OPS is the lowest in baseball. Against right-handed pitching they hit .251 with a .698 OPS. Their run differential is minus-61.

Toronto's Braydon Fisher is a legitimately awkward matchup and the reason the number sits where it does. He throws a slider 49.9 percent of the time at 88.6 mph and a curveball 29.0 percent at 81.6, with the four-seamer down at 17.3 percent, and he has held hitters to a .208 average with a 3.65 ERA in six starts. Tampa Bay counters with Griffin Jax, whose 4.08 ERA undersells a 9.24 strikeout-per-nine rate and a four-pitch mix spread almost evenly between a sweeper at 26.0 percent, a changeup at 22.5, a sinker at 20.4 and a four-seamer at 18.0 percent and 96.2 mph. The Rays are 23-27 on the road and hit .253 with a .703 OPS away from home, which is the only thing keeping this close.

Padres @ Braves

Atlanta leads the National League East at 58-42 with a plus-104 run differential and a 3.64 staff ERA, fourth-best among the eighteen clubs playing tonight. San Diego is 50-51 and thirteen and a half games back in the West, a team whose 4.21 staff ERA is respectable and whose bats are not.

The Padres have scored 415 runs, an average of 4.11 per game, and their .688 team OPS is one of the five lowest in baseball. They hit .230 as a club. That is the entire story of a season that started with expectations and has drifted toward the deadline as a seller's profile.

Michael King gives San Diego a real chance regardless. His 3.34 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and .212 opponent average across 113.1 innings are the best full-season line of any starter in this game, built on a sinker at 29.0 percent and 92.9 mph paired with a changeup at 27.4 percent and 86.3. Atlanta answers with Martin Perez, a left-hander whose 3.54 ERA and .221 opponent average over 81.1 innings have been quietly excellent, working off a sinker at 32.8 percent and 89.1 and a changeup at 30.4 percent and 82.0. Two contact managers, two lineups that do not punish mistakes often, and a total of 8.5.

Chicago leads the American League Central at 53-47, which is remarkable for a club that is 31-17 at Rate Field and 22-30 everywhere else. That is a 109-point gap in winning percentage between the South Side and everywhere else, and the White Sox are in Arlington off a 10-0 loss on Tuesday after winning 10-3 on Monday.

Texas is 51-50 and leads nobody, sitting first in the American League West by percentage points in a division where three clubs are within three games. The Rangers have scored 425 runs at 4.21 per game and allowed 453, a minus-28 differential that matches a .500 team honestly.

Both starters are left-handed, which is unusual and matters. Chicago's Anthony Kay has a 4.24 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP over 93.1 innings with a six-pitch mix headlined by a four-seamer at 23.3 percent and 95.8 mph, hard for a lefty, plus a sweeper at 22.3 percent and 82.6. Texas counters with Tyler Alexander, whose 2.79 ERA across 42 innings comes with only three starts and a 1.31 WHIP that suggests the ERA is running ahead of the process. His changeup at 25.4 percent and 84.5 mph is his most-used pitch.

Game 8

Tigers @ Cubs

The national television game brings the best WHIP on the board to Wrigley Field. Keider Montero has walked 22 hitters in 100.2 innings, a rate of 1.97 per nine, and the result is a 0.98 WHIP with a 3.22 ERA and a .209 opponent average. He is a five-pitch right-hander who leads with a four-seamer at 31.5 percent and 94.3 mph and a sinker at 23.0 percent and 94.7, and he does not beat himself.

He will need all of it. Chicago has scored 519 runs at 5.14 per game with a .340 team on-base percentage, second in tonight's nine games only to the Dodgers at .341, and the Cubs are 57-44 and 30-21 at home. They demolished Detroit 11-2 on Tuesday after losing 8-6 on Monday.

Colin Rea is the reason the Cubs are only laying -125 in this spot. His 4.74 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 15 home runs allowed in 100.2 innings make him the least reliable starter on either side, and his four-seamer at 42.6 percent and 93.7 mph is a pitch Detroit can handle. The Tigers are 47-54 but have a 3.67 staff ERA and have allowed only 404 runs, forty-six fewer than the Cubs in the same number of games. This is a better team than the record says.

Game 9

Marlins @ Astros

Miami arrives in the worst condition of any club on the board. The Marlins have lost eight consecutive games and are 2-8 in their last ten, having dropped the first two here 8-5 and 5-3. At 52-50 they are still only seven games out in the National League East, which is what makes the slide sting.

They send out the workhorse of the season. Sandy Alcantara has thrown 136.2 innings across 21 starts, more than any other pitcher scheduled tonight, with a 3.89 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and only 37 walks. His sinker averages 97.4 mph and accounts for 25.5 percent of his pitches, with a changeup at 21.0 percent and 91.0 and a four-seamer at 19.1 percent and 97.5 behind it. He is 10-5 on a team that has stopped scoring for him.

Houston counters with the hardest starter to hit on the entire schedule. Peter Lambert has held opposing hitters to a .197 average with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP across 92 innings, spreading six pitches from a 94.0 mph four-seamer down to an 82.4 mph sweeper. The wrinkle is that the Astros are a worse offense at home than on the road, hitting .232 with a .710 OPS at Daikin Park against .251 and .743 away from it, and their home record is 25-27.
