Blue Jays at Giants

Wednesday, 3:45 PM ET | Oracle Park, San Francisco, CA
Blue Jays 43-49 at Giants 38-53 | Dylan Cease (5-4, 2.79 ERA) vs Logan Webb (5-6, 3.66 ERA)

The day opens with a genuine pitching treat by the Bay. Toronto's Dylan Cease has been dominant at 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA and the highest strikeout rate among qualified starters in baseball at roughly 13.7 per nine, and he draws Giants ace Logan Webb, an All-Star in his own right at 5-6 with a 3.66 ERA and a .241 batting average against. Two arms of this caliber inside Oracle Park, one of the most run-suppressing yards in the majors, set up a low-scoring matinee. The Giants at 38-53 and the Blue Jays at 43-49 are both scuffling in the standings, so the story here is entirely on the mound, where efficiency and swing-and-miss should keep both lineups working for every run.

Cubs at Orioles

Wednesday, 6:35 PM ET | Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD
Cubs 51-40 at Orioles 42-50 | Colin Rea (6-5, 4.74 ERA) vs Dean Kremer (1-1, 3.18 ERA)

The contending Cubs bring a 51-40 record into Camden Yards against an Orioles club sitting well below .500 at 42-50. Baltimore hands the ball to Dean Kremer, who is working his way back into the rotation and has been homer-prone lately, allowing five long balls across just 17 innings, a worrying trend in a park that rewards fly-ball contact. Chicago counters with Colin Rea at 6-5 with a 4.74 ERA, a serviceable innings-eater rather than a shutdown arm. The subplot is that both offenses have cooled off, with the Cubs managing only 12 runs over a recent four-game stretch and Baltimore scoring just 27 across its last ten, so whether Kremer's home-run issues resurface may decide the night.

Athletics at Tigers

Wednesday, 6:40 PM ET | Comerica Park, Detroit, MI
Athletics 41-50 at Tigers 41-50 | Jeffrey Springs (3-8, 5.79 ERA) vs Troy Melton (4-1, 2.05 ERA)

Two clubs with identical 41-50 records meet at Comerica Park, but the pitching matchup is anything but even. Detroit sends Troy Melton, who has been outstanding at 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA and profiles as a heavy home favorite against a light Athletics lineup. The visitors counter with Jeffrey Springs, who is struggling badly at 3-8 with a 5.79 ERA, giving Detroit its clearest pitching edge of the night. Comerica's deep gaps have historically punished fly-ball contact, which only widens the gap between a sharp young Tigers arm and an A's staff that has been leaking runs all season.

MLB

Braves at Pirates

Wednesday, 6:40 PM ET | PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA
Braves 52-38 at Pirates 47-45 | Grant Holmes (5-4, 3.83 ERA) vs Jared Jones (1-1, 5.28 ERA)

This is a case of records and recent form pulling in opposite directions. Atlanta owns the far better record at 52-38, but a surging Pittsburgh club at 47-45 has been made a slight home favorite by the market on the back of its recent play. The Braves send Grant Holmes at 5-4 with a 3.83 ERA, a steady arm behind whom Atlanta has been a strong 10-5 against the spread this season, while the Pirates counter with Jared Jones, whose 5.28 ERA reflects an uneven year. If Holmes pitches to his season line, the Braves' superior lineup should have the edge, but Pittsburgh's home form makes this closer than the standings suggest.

Mariners at Marlins

Wednesday, 6:40 PM ET | loanDepot park, Miami, FL
Mariners 47-45 at Marlins 50-42 | George Kirby (7-7, 3.81 ERA) vs Tyler Phillips (1-3, 3.52 ERA)

One of the quieter surprises of the season is that the home team is the one above .500 by more here: Miami has climbed to 50-42, sitting above the visiting Mariners at 47-45. Seattle counters with the more established arm in George Kirby, whose 7-7 record and 3.81 ERA understate a strike-thrower capable of a long, efficient outing, against Marlins right-hander Tyler Phillips at 1-3 with a 3.52 ERA. loanDepot park's controlled environment tends to keep totals modest, and with Kirby's command against a Miami lineup that has punched above its weight, this projects as a competitive, middle-of-the-board matchup.

Yankees at Rays

Wednesday, 6:40 PM ET | Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL
Yankees 50-41 at Rays 53-36 | Gerrit Cole (3-3, 4.01 ERA) vs Shane McClanahan (7-5, 3.05 ERA)

Wednesday's featured game is an AL East showdown with the division balance in play. Tampa Bay leads the division at 53-36, a fortress-like 31-13 at home and winners of seven of its last ten, while New York arrives at 50-41 having lost eight of ten with an offense that has gone quiet. The story is Junior Caminero, who has homered in six straight games during a historic tear that has him near 24 home runs, opposite a Yankees lineup playing without the injured Aaron Judge. On the mound, Shane McClanahan (7-5, 3.05) draws Gerrit Cole (3-3, 4.01), who has been uneven but already blanked these Rays over six innings in May. For the full breakdown, see the featured game preview.

Astros at Nationals

Wednesday, 6:45 PM ET | Nationals Park, Washington, DC
Astros 46-48 at Nationals 47-46 | Spencer Arrighetti (7-4, 3.81 ERA) vs Foster Griffin (9-2, 2.87 ERA)

The rubber game of this three-game set features the day's most under-the-radar quality arm. Washington's Foster Griffin has quietly been terrific at 9-2 with a 2.87 ERA, a big reason the Nationals have edged above .500 at 47-46. Houston, at 46-48, counters with Spencer Arrighetti at 7-4 with a 3.81 ERA, a solid mid-rotation starter but not the shutdown type. With Griffin carrying the better line and pitching at home, the Nationals will look to lean on their rotation to take the series, while the Astros need their bats to solve a pitcher who has been one of the surprises of the National League.

Early Evening

Royals at Mets

Wednesday, 7:10 PM ET | Citi Field, Queens, NY
Royals 38-54 at Mets 38-54 | Steven Cruz (2-2, 5.08 ERA) vs Christian Scott (2-1, 3.49 ERA)

Two clubs with matching 38-54 records meet at Citi Field, but the home side is the solid favorite thanks to the pitching edge. New York's Christian Scott brings a tidy 3.49 ERA to the mound against Kansas City's Steven Cruz, who has struggled at 2-2 with a 5.08 ERA. The Mets have been an over team at home of late, hitting the over in a healthy share of their recent games in Queens, so the question is whether Scott can keep the total down or whether two scuffling offenses trade enough for it to climb. For the Royals, solving Scott early is the clearest path to stealing one on the road.

Phillies at Reds

Wednesday, 7:10 PM ET | Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, OH
Phillies 51-41 at Reds 41-49 | Chase Burns (10-1, 2.40 ERA) opposite a Phillies starter yet to be named

The night's headline arm belongs to Cincinnati. Reds right-hander Chase Burns, just 23 years old, has been electric at 10-1 with a 2.40 ERA and better than 10 strikeouts per nine, and he has been especially sharp lately, carrying a low-3.00s FIP over his last handful of starts. He faces a contending Phillies club at 51-41 that, as of the morning, had not yet named its starter opposite him. Great American Ball Park is a notorious launching pad, which makes Burns's ability to miss bats all the more valuable, and the matchup pits a rising ace against a deep Philadelphia lineup that is more than capable of testing him if he leaves anything over the plate.

Guardians at Twins

Wednesday, 7:40 PM ET | Target Field, Minneapolis, MN
Guardians 47-45 at Twins 45-47 | Slade Cecconi (4-6, 4.44 ERA) vs Connor Prielipp (2-5, 4.96 ERA)

A tight AL Central matchup pits the Guardians at 47-45 against the Twins at 45-47, two clubs separated by a couple of games in the standings. Cleveland sends Slade Cecconi at 4-6 with a 4.44 ERA, a steady if unspectacular arm, against Minnesota's Connor Prielipp, who at 2-5 with a 4.96 ERA is still finding his footing. Neither offense has been a juggernaut, with the Twins in particular running a negative run differential on the season, so this projects as a grind between division rivals where the bullpens and a timely rally are likely to decide it.

Red Sox at White Sox

Wednesday, 7:40 PM ET | Rate Field, Chicago, IL
Red Sox 41-48 at White Sox 47-43 | Jake Bennett (3-3, 3.10 ERA) vs Davis Martin (9-3, 3.08 ERA)

The standings flip in this battle of the Sox is one of the season's stories: the White Sox have climbed to 47-43 and above .500, while Boston sits below at 41-48. It is also a sharp two-sided pitching matchup. Chicago's Davis Martin has been excellent at 9-3 with a 3.08 ERA, and Boston counters with Jake Bennett at 3-3 with a 3.10 ERA, nearly identical run-prevention numbers. With both starters throwing the ball well, this profiles as one of the lower-scoring games on the board, hinging on which lineup manufactures the timely runs against a quality opposing arm.

Brewers at Cardinals

Wednesday, 7:45 PM ET | Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO
Brewers 58-33 at Cardinals 47-43 | Kyle Harrison (8-1, 2.82 ERA) vs Michael McGreevy (3-7, 3.12 ERA)

The best team in the National League continues its series in St. Louis. Milwaukee owns baseball's top NL record at 58-33 and sits seven and a half games clear atop the NL Central, and the Brewers roll in having swept a Tuesday doubleheader from these same Cardinals. They send Kyle Harrison, outstanding at 8-1 with a 2.82 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 99 strikeouts, against a competent St. Louis club at 47-43 that turns to Michael McGreevy at 3-7 with a 3.12 ERA. The Cardinals need to slow the momentum of a division leader that has been the class of the league, and doing it means solving one of the more efficient young left-handers in the National League.

Angels at Rangers

Wednesday, 8:05 PM ET | Globe Life Field, Arlington, TX
Angels 36-56 at Rangers 46-45 | Walbert Urena (5-7, 3.03 ERA) vs MacKenzie Gore (5-7, 4.31 ERA)

The Angels arrive in Texas in dire form, sitting last in the AL West at 36-56 and riding a lengthy losing streak with baseball's coldest offense. That backdrop frames a matchup in which their own starter has quietly been the sharper of the two: Walbert Urena carries a 3.03 ERA with 75 strikeouts in 77.1 innings, against Rangers left-hander MacKenzie Gore at 5-7 with a 4.31 ERA. Texas at 46-45 has been ordinary rather than explosive, and inside a controlled-roof Globe Life Field, the combination of a struggling Angels lineup and two capable arms points toward another low-scoring night in Arlington.

Diamondbacks at Padres

Wednesday, 10:00 PM ET | Petco Park, San Diego, CA
Diamondbacks 45-46 at Padres 45-46 | Jose Cabrera (0-1, 4.73 ERA) vs Michael King (5-7, 3.52 ERA)

Two clubs deadlocked at 45-46 in a tight NL West meet in the board's lowest-total game. San Diego turns to Michael King, whose 5-7 record and 3.52 ERA look solid on the surface, though his underlying peripherals flash some warning signs, while Arizona counters with Jose Cabrera at 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA. Petco Park is one of the more pitcher-friendly environments in the National League, and Arizona has trended toward the under in a large share of its recent games. With two evenly matched teams in a low-scoring yard, this shapes up as a tight, late-night NL West battle.

Night Cap
MLB

Rockies at Dodgers

Wednesday, 10:10 PM ET | Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Rockies 38-55 at Dodgers 60-33 | Gabriel Hughes (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Roki Sasaki (3-5, 5.40 ERA)

The nightcap is the widest talent gap on the board. Los Angeles owns the best record in baseball at 60-33, while Colorado sits near the bottom of the sport at 38-55. The intrigue is on the mound, where the Dodgers send Roki Sasaki, who has endured an up-and-down season at 3-5 with a 5.40 ERA despite his enormous talent, against Colorado's Gabriel Hughes. Even with Sasaki's uneven form, the sheer gulf in rosters and the Rockies' well-documented struggles away from Coors Field make this a steep climb for the visitors under the lights at Dodger Stadium.
