Giants Twice In San Diego Lead A Three-Play Thursday

San Francisco scored sixteen runs on Wednesday. Sixteen, in a 16-3 dismantling of a Brewers club that owns the best record in the National League, one night after that same Milwaukee team beat them 8-2. That is the whole San Francisco season in 48 hours, and it is exactly why the market still prices them as a big underdog tonight in San Diego. This card takes the Giants twice anyway and backs Sonny Gray at his heaviest price of the year. Three plays, five and a half units.

Giants +1.5: A Bat-First Team At A Runner's Price

San Francisco is 46-62 and buried 22 games back in the NL West, and San Diego has won five straight, so the shape of this price makes sense on the surface. Look one layer deeper and it gets a lot less obvious. Robbie Ray gets the ball for the Giants at 9-6 with a 3.16 ERA across 116.2 innings, and his last time out he threw six shutout innings against the Angels on July 25, allowing six hits without a walk that hurt him. He has allowed one earned run or none in each of his last three starts, and back in late June he ripped off consecutive eight-inning scoreless outings. That is a legitimate No. 1 starter being priced like a throwaway because of the standings around him.

San Diego counters with JP Sears, who has made only five starts this season, 28 innings in total, and has not completed six innings in any of his last three. The Padres are 55-53 and playing their best baseball of the year, 7-3 over their last 10, but the five-game winning streak is built on a sweep in Miami and two home wins over a last-place Rockies club. With Ray pitching this well, a game and a half of insurance on a lineup that just hung 16 on Milwaukee is worth a unit at -155.

Giants Team Total Over: The Sears Workload Problem

The bigger of the two Giants plays is the team total, and it is entirely about the fifth inning onward. Sears has thrown 4.1, 5.0 and 3.1 innings in his last three starts. Even when he is effective, and he was against Miami on July 25 with 3.1 scoreless innings, San Diego's bullpen has to cover half the game behind him. The Giants only need four runs across nine innings against a starter on a limited leash and whatever follows him.

San Francisco averages 4.23 runs per game this season, above this number on a season-long basis, and just produced its loudest offensive game of the year. Betting a 16-run night to repeat would be foolish. Betting that lineup to scratch out four against a starter who has not finished six innings since his return is a different proposition entirely. Two units on the Giants team total over 3.5 at -125.

Red Sox Moneyline: Gray Against A Bullpen Game

This is the heaviest favorite on the card and the most straightforward case. Sonny Gray is 12-2 with a 2.78 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP across 106.2 innings, and he faces an Athletics club that is 45-63, has lost seven of 10, and is not sending a starter out at all in the conventional sense. Mason Barnett gets the ball for the A's with zero starts this season, 24.2 innings all in relief, and his longest outing of the year was 3.1 innings against Minnesota on July 25. Sacramento is getting a bullpen game against one of the best pitchers in the American League.

Boston is 56-51, has won seven of 10, and leads this series two games to one, taking Wednesday's game 4-2. The price is steep, and Gray's most recent start was his worst in months, five earned runs on ten hits in Toronto on July 25. But that start came with zero walks, the stuff was in the zone getting hit rather than missing it, and everything before it was vintage: one earned run over six innings in back-to-back starts against the Mets and Rays. Two and a half units on Boston at -175.

What Can Beat It

The honest risks, one by one. The Giants run line and team total both lean on a lineup that scored three runs or fewer in five of the eight games before Wednesday's eruption, so the 16-run game is the outlier here, not the baseline. Petco Park at night suppresses exactly the kind of contact the team total over needs, and San Diego has won five straight for a reason. Gray at -175 leaves no room for a repeat of the Toronto start, and bullpen games are annoying precisely because there is no starter to game-plan against, a parade of fresh arms can keep a lineup off balance for a night.

The Bottom Line

Ranked by conviction, the Red Sox moneyline at -175 carries the most weight because the gap between a 12-2 starter and a bullpen game is the widest on the board. The Giants +1.5 at -155 and the team total over 3.5 at -125 attack Petco from the underdog side, a live lineup with the better starter and a bullpen-exposed opponent. Five and a half units across two games on Thursday.
