A Full MLS Midweek: Nashville And Vancouver On Top, Philadelphia Favored From Last Place

Nashville has lost one match all season. One, in fifteen, alongside eleven wins and three draws for 36 points, the most in Major League Soccer. The number that carries them is at the back: 11 goals conceded in fifteen matches, fewer than any club in the league, against 32 scored for a goal difference of plus-21.

Montreal is eleventh in the East on 15 points from fifteen, four wins, three draws and eight defeats, with 22 scored and 31 conceded. Nine of those goals against have come in the last stretch of a season that has drifted since spring, and the visitors have not found a way to defend deep without eventually breaking.

The total of 2.5 with Nashville at -205 is the market saying it expects a controlled home win rather than a rout. That fits the profile. Nashville does not blow teams away, 32 goals in fifteen matches is 2.13 per game, but it does not concede either, and a one-goal lead in Tennessee has been enough almost every time this year.

Vancouver leads the Western Conference with 32 points from fourteen matches and owns the best goal difference in Major League Soccer at plus-22, having scored 34 and conceded 12. Ten wins, two draws, two defeats. No club in either conference has both scored that freely and defended that well.

Cincinnati is a genuinely odd team to measure. Seventh in the East on 20 points from fifteen, an exactly balanced five wins, five draws and five defeats, but with 36 goals scored and 37 conceded. That is the second-highest scoring total in the conference attached to the second-most goals conceded in it. Their matches produce goals whether they win or not.

Which is why a road favorite at -120 sits alongside a total of 3.5. The market expects an open game and expects Vancouver to win it. The counterargument is simple travel: the Whitecaps have crossed the continent for a midweek kickoff, and Cincinnati at home has been capable of scoring against anyone.

San Jose is second in the West on 32 points from fifteen, level with Vancouver but a match further along, with ten wins, two draws and three defeats. The Earthquakes have scored 34 and conceded 15 for a plus-19 difference, the third-best mark in the league behind Vancouver and Nashville.

Orlando City has conceded 44 goals in fifteen matches, the most in Major League Soccer by a distance and nearly three per game. The Lions have scored a respectable 23, but four wins, two draws and nine defeats for 14 points leaves them thirteenth in the East. They have not solved anything defensively since the spring.

A total of 3.5 with San Jose at -160 is a straightforward read of those two profiles: a strong home side against the leakiest defense in the competition. The one thing keeping this from being priced shorter is the hour. A 10:30 PM Eastern kickoff for a team that flew from Florida is a real variable, and Orlando has scored in most of its defeats.

Real Salt Lake is third in the West on 26 points from fourteen matches, eight wins, two draws and four defeats, with 26 scored and 19 conceded. That is a better points-per-match rate than the team it is visiting, and RSL has the game in hand as well.

LAFC is fifth on 24 points from fifteen, seven wins, three draws and five defeats, scoring 24 and conceding 17. The defensive record is solid, the scoring is not prolific, and the gap between third and fifth in this conference is two points with a match still to play.

The pricing therefore says more about the venue than the table. LAFC at -145 is a home number rather than a form number, and the total of 3.5 is on the higher side for two sides whose matches have averaged 3.21 and 2.73 total goals respectively. The draw at +300 is worth noting given how close these two are on every measure that is not geography.

This is the strangest price on the board. Philadelphia is bottom of the Eastern Conference with one win, four draws and ten defeats from fifteen matches, a total of 7 points, and yet the Union are a clear -145 home favorite against a Red Bull side sitting fifth on 22 points.

Part of the answer is in what the visitors give up. Red Bull New York has conceded 32 goals and carries a negative goal difference of minus-7 despite six wins and four draws, the only club in the top five of the Eastern Conference on the wrong side of zero. They score, at 25, and they leak.

The rest of the answer is that Philadelphia's record undersells the matches. The Union have scored 18 and conceded 30, a minus-12 difference that is bad but not the worst in the conference, and four of their fifteen results are draws. This is a side losing tight games rather than being dismantled. A total of 3.5 for a match involving a side that has scored eighteen goals in fifteen outings is the market betting on Red Bull chaos rather than Philadelphia fireworks.

New England has drawn once in fourteen matches. Once. Eight wins, five defeats and a single stalemate for 25 points, fourth in the Eastern Conference, with 22 scored and 18 conceded. The Revolution deal in results rather than points shared, which makes the draw price of +255 more interesting than it looks.

Toronto is twelfth on 15 points from fifteen, and the shape is the exact opposite: three wins, six draws and six defeats. Six draws is joint-most in the conference. They have scored 22, the same as New England, and conceded 29.

Two clubs with identical scoring output and very different appetites for the tie. The total of 2.5 sits right on the combined average, and New England at +105 in its own building is close to a coin flip on a night when the home side has the better underlying numbers and the visitor has the better recent habit of not losing.

Seattle has played fewer matches than anyone in the West, thirteen, and has 24 points from seven wins, three draws and three defeats. The Sounders have conceded 11 goals, tied for the fewest in Major League Soccer, but have scored only 17. That is the tightest low-event profile in the conference.

Austin is fourteenth on 14 points from fifteen, three wins, five draws and seven defeats, with 19 scored and 31 conceded. Home form has not saved them, and a minus-12 goal difference tells the story of a season spent chasing.

The total of 2.5 is generous given Seattle's involvement. The Sounders average 1.31 goals scored and 0.85 conceded per match, which is a 2.16 combined rate, and Austin has not shown the attacking output to drag a game past three. Seattle at +125 as the road side reflects the schedule, not the table.

Houston has one of the most polarized records in the league: seven wins, one draw and six defeats from fourteen matches for 22 points, seventh in the West. The Dynamo have scored 19 and conceded 23, a negative difference attached to a winning record, which usually means a handful of heavy losses among the victories.

D.C. United is ninth in the East on 18 points from fifteen, four wins, six draws and five defeats, with 21 scored and 25 conceded. Six draws from fifteen is a team that rarely gets outplayed and rarely takes control.

Put a side that almost never draws against a side that draws constantly and the +275 on the tie becomes the most interesting number in the match. The total of 2.5 fits two attacks that have combined for 40 goals in 29 matches, which is barely 1.4 apiece.
