Sparta Prague at Lyon
Tuesday, 3:00 PM ET | Groupama Stadium, Lyon, France
The first leg in Prague finished 2-1 to Sparta, which leaves Lyon needing to overturn a one-goal deficit in front of their own crowd to keep a Champions League place alive. The market still makes the French side heavy favorites on the night: Lyon -275, Sparta +650, the draw at +425, with the goals total set at 3.5, the highest number on any of Tuesday's Champions League qualifiers.
That total is the tell. A 3.5 line in a knockout second leg is a bookmaker saying it expects Lyon to push men forward and leave space behind, which is exactly the shape of game a Sparta side that already scored twice in the first leg wants. Ten third-round ties were scheduled across the day and only this one carried a number that high.
Groupama Stadium is the venue detail worth knowing. Officially Parc Olympique Lyonnais, it seats 59,186 in Decines-Charpieu on the eastern edge of the Metropolis of Lyon, and it is the third largest stadium in France behind the Stade de France and the Orange Velodrome. Lyon have the crowd, the price and the possession they are going to need. Sparta have the goal advantage and no obligation to chase anything.
