Dylan Cease Has Allowed One Earned Run In His Last Twenty-Two Innings

Cleveland is 58-61 and Detroit is 58-60, identical clubs in the standings and nowhere near identical right now. The Tigers have won seven of ten. The Guardians have lost seven of ten. Tanner Bibee is the most misleading line on the whole board: 4-11 with a 3.85 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 110 strikeouts in 138 innings, more innings than any other starter working tonight. Cleveland scores 3.97 runs a game, the lowest figure in the major leagues, which explains the win column entirely. His pitch usage is nearly flat, cutter 24.8 percent, sinker 23.2, four-seam 22.2, changeup 14.3, and on August 5 he struck out ten Mets in five and two-thirds innings without walking a batter.

Drew Anderson answers for Detroit, and the shape of his season matters more than his 4.01 ERA: 41 appearances, three of them starts, 67.1 innings and 78 strikeouts. This is a bullpen game with a name attached to the first inning, and the Tigers are running it with Jack Flaherty on the fifteen-day injured list. Detroit's bats have made that workable, averaging seven and a half runs over the last ten games, including eleven-run nights on August 2 in Oakland and August 6 in Seattle.

Chicago is 69-50 and second in the National League Central, five games behind Milwaukee. Washington is 59-61 but has won three straight and scores 5.36 runs a game, the highest figure in the major leagues. The Cubs are -176 with the Nationals at +163 and the total set at 9, the joint-highest number in the early window.

Shota Imanaga starts for Chicago at 8-9 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.09 WHIP and 125 strikeouts in 132.2 innings. The splitter is the pitch: 32.6 percent of everything he throws, behind a four-seamer at 40.9 and ahead of a sweeper at 14.7. He has allowed 25 home runs, a high number for an ERA that low, and he is walking into a Washington lineup with 171 of them.

Jake Irvin gets the ball for the Nationals at 2-5 with a 5.37 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP and 62 strikeouts in 62 innings across thirteen starts. His last time out, August 5 against Philadelphia, he gave five and a third innings and two earned runs. Washington's staff carries a 4.71 team ERA and has allowed 619 runs, which is why a club scoring more than anyone in the sport sits two games under .500.

New York is 66-52 with a 3.30 team ERA, the best mark in baseball, and a lineup hitting .230, one of the lowest averages in the sport. That combination, 167 home runs and very few singles, is the whole 2026 Yankees season in two numbers. Seattle is 56-63, has lost four in a row and seven of ten, and scores 3.88 runs a game, the lowest of any team in the majors. New York is -129 with Seattle at +120 and the total at 8.

Bryan Woo takes the ball for the Mariners at 8-8 with a 4.31 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 127 strikeouts in 127.1 innings. He is a fastball pitcher first, four-seam 46.7 percent and sinker 18.8, and his last outing was his best in a month: seven shutout innings against Detroit on August 5 with five strikeouts and three hits allowed.

Ryan Weathers answers for New York at 5-7 with a 3.79 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 121 innings, and he has been excellent lately. Seven scoreless against the White Sox on July 30, six scoreless against St. Louis on August 4, thirteen straight innings without an earned run. A pitcher on that kind of stretch against the lowest-scoring lineup in baseball is the reason this total sits at 8 rather than higher.

Toronto is 57-63 and thirteen games worse than Boston in the standings, and the Blue Jays are the favorite tonight at -136 with the Red Sox at +127 and the total set at 7. One man is the reason.

Dylan Cease is 7-5 with a 2.28 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 184 strikeouts in 126.1 innings, and opponents are hitting .179 against him, the lowest opponent average of any starter on tonight's fifteen-game board. His last three starts: a nine-inning shutout against these same Red Sox on July 25 with twelve strikeouts and one hit allowed, six innings and one earned run at St. Louis on July 31, then seven scoreless with ten strikeouts against the Cubs on August 6. Boston counters with Patrick Sandoval, who has made five starts on the season and holds a 3.38 ERA with a 1.67 WHIP, a walk-and-hit rate that will not survive many more outings without the ERA following it. He allowed nine hits in five innings to Tampa Bay on July 18 and four walks to the White Sox on August 4. Boston is 64-54 and 35-23 on the road, the best road record in the American League, and the Red Sox will need every bit of that against a pitcher on this run.

Both starters hold hitters to exactly .208. Nolan McLean is 8-7 for the Mets with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP and 156 strikeouts in 130.2 innings, built around a sinker he throws 32.5 percent of the time and a curveball and sweeper he uses almost equally at roughly 14.5 percent each. On July 19 he threw six shutout innings at Philadelphia with ten strikeouts.

Martin Perez has been the steadier of the two by results: 7-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 100.1 innings, though with only 78 strikeouts. He is a sinker-and-changeup pitcher, 34.5 percent and 30.2 percent, with a cutter at 22.9, and he has not allowed an earned run in either of his last two outings. New York is without Juan Soto and Mark Vientos on the ten-day injured list and Devin Williams on the fifteen-day, which thins both the lineup and the late innings.

Baltimore is 57-62 and Minnesota is 59-61, and the market has this nearly even: Minnesota -112, Baltimore +104, total 9. Both clubs have allowed more runs than they have scored, Baltimore by 37 and Minnesota by 31, and both are 4-6 over their last ten.

Brandon Young has quietly been Baltimore's most reliable starter at 8-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 107.2 innings, though the 1.31 WHIP says he works with traffic. His splitter is his second-most-used pitch at 20 percent, behind a four-seamer at 39.5. His last outing was his shortest in a month, four and a third innings and three earned runs against the Angels on August 6.

Bailey Ober starts for Minnesota at 7-3 with a 4.45 ERA, and his August 6 outing against Kansas City is worth pausing on: six innings, three earned runs, zero strikeouts and zero walks. A full six frames without a single punchout is rare for a pitcher whose changeup is his most-thrown pitch at 35.2 percent. Minnesota's 4.59 team ERA is among the worst in the American League, which is the main reason a total of 9 sits on this game.

Chicago is 61-56 and 36-22 at Rate Field, one of the three best home records in the sport, against 25-34 on the road. Cincinnati is 56-61 and has lost three straight. The White Sox are -153 with the Reds at +142 and the total set at 7.5.

Sean Burke has been the story of Chicago's summer: 7-6 with a 3.08 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 128.2 innings, holding hitters to .222. His curveball is unusually prominent at 20.6 percent of his pitches, behind a four-seamer at 37.5 and a slider at 16.7. He struck out ten Yankees in six scoreless innings on July 30.

Nick Lodolo takes the ball for Cincinnati, and the notable fact is the gap: his most recent start came on July 11 against the Cubs. He is 3-2 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 62.2 innings across twelve starts, and he is one of the few pitchers in the league who essentially throws four pitches in equal measure, four-seam 26.9 percent, sinker 25.4, curveball 23.9, changeup 23.8. How deep he goes after a month away is the question that decides this game.

Cristopher Sanchez is 15-4 with a 2.65 ERA and 174 strikeouts in 149.2 innings, the most wins of any pitcher on the board. Very few starters in the league throw a changeup that often. On August 1 he struck out eleven Orioles in six shutout innings.

Andre Pallante has been better than his 3.63 ERA lately. Over his last four starts the Cardinals right-hander has allowed six earned runs in 23.2 innings, including seven scoreless against Cincinnati on July 25. He does not miss bats, 90 strikeouts in 124 innings, and lives on a slider he throws 29.6 percent of the time behind a four-seamer at 31.7. Philadelphia's .238 team average has to put balls in play to beat that.

Texas is 60-59 and half a game behind Houston in the American League West. Los Angeles is 45-74, the worst record in the league, and 20-40 on the road with a 25-34 home mark that is not much better. The Rangers are -145 with the Angels at +135 and the total at 9.

Cody Bradford makes his second start of the season for Texas. He was activated from the sixty-day injured list on August 5 and threw four and a third scoreless innings against San Francisco that night with five strikeouts. Texas has had a brutal week on the pitching side: Nathan Eovaldi went on the fifteen-day list on August 10 with right posterior elbow inflammation, and Jack Leiter was moved to the sixty-day list on August 9 with a right ankle posterior impingement. Jordan Montgomery was activated on August 7, which is the one piece of good news.

Ryan Johnson starts for the Angels at 2-6 with a 7.11 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP in 50.2 innings. He is a rare pitcher with no true four-seam fastball in his mix at all: cutter 30.4 percent, sinker 26.8, splitter 25.8, sweeper 16.6. His last outing on August 6 was four and two-thirds innings with one earned run allowed but five walks issued, which is roughly the shape of his season.

Tomoyuki Sugano is 11-5, which is a fine record attached to a difficult season. He has allowed 22 home runs in 107.2 innings, the most of any starter on tonight's board, while striking out only 61 batters. His splitter is his most-used secondary at 21.4 percent, ahead of a four-seamer at 20.5 and a sinker at 19.3, and the low strikeout total means a lot of balls get put in play against a Colorado defense backing the worst staff ERA in baseball at 5.51.

Mitch Bratt starts for Arizona and has been wild but effective, 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA and 18 walks in 27.2 innings across six starts. His last outing was the best of his young career: seven innings, one hit, no runs and nine strikeouts against San Diego on August 5. He is a four-seam and slurve pitcher, 39 percent and 26 percent, and if the walks come back tonight the Rockies lineup, which has scored 568 runs, has enough to make him pay.

Kyle Harrison has been Milwaukee's most efficient starter: 9-2 with a 2.84 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 111 strikeouts in 88.2 innings, with opponents hitting .214. He is essentially a two-pitch pitcher, four-seamer 57.8 percent and slurve 30.9, and on August 5 he threw five one-hit innings against Pittsburgh with ten strikeouts. Behind him sits the second-best team ERA in the sport at 3.47.

Walker Buehler counters for San Diego at 6-5 with a 5.07 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP, the highest of any starter working tonight, and 45 walks in 108.1 innings. He has been better recently, eight earned runs across his last four starts, and his August 6 outing against Arizona was four innings and one earned run. Milwaukee has averaged 3.5 runs over its last ten games, which is why a matchup with a 5.07 ERA on one side still carries a total of 7.5.

Tampa Bay is 72-46, the best record in the American League, and has won seven in a row. Oakland is 47-72, has lost eight of its last ten and is 21-37 at Sutter Health Park, the worst home record in the major leagues. Mason Barnett starts for Oakland. He has made two starts among sixteen appearances this season and holds a 5.56 ERA in 34 innings with 36 strikeouts, so the swing-and-miss is real even if the results are not. His last outing was four and a third innings and five earned runs against Cincinnati on August 6. Oakland's 5.45 team ERA and 684 runs allowed are the numbers behind that 10.5.

Houston is 61-59 and leads the American League West by half a game over Texas. San Francisco is 49-70, has lost three straight and eight of ten, and is 22-40 on the road with a 27-30 mark at Oracle Park. The Astros are -177 with the Giants at +165 and the total at 8.

Hunter Brown has the best contact-suppression numbers of any Houston starter: 3-1 with a 3.53 ERA and a .196 opponent batting average in 58.2 innings, the second-lowest mark of anyone starting tonight. The catch is the walks, 32 of them in that span, and a six-walk outing against Baltimore on July 19. His curveball is unusually featured at 20.1 percent behind a four-seamer at 34.2 and a sinker at 28.5.

Carson Whisenhunt starts for San Francisco at 2-3 with a 7.25 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP in 22.1 innings across five starts. He has not completed four innings in either of his last two outings, three and a third against San Diego on July 31 and three and a third against Texas on August 5. He throws a changeup 37.8 percent of the time, the highest usage of that pitch by any starter tonight, and Houston's 4.63 runs a game is a difficult first test for a mix that heavily dependent on one offering.

Blake Snell is listed as the Los Angeles starter, which would be his first appearance since May 9. He has thrown three major league innings this season, and the Dodgers sent him on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City on August 4. Behind him, the bullpen is missing Blake Treinen, Brock Stewart and Will Klein, and the club is still without both catchers, Will Smith on the sixty-day injured list and Dalton Rushing on the ten-day.

Michael Wacha has been Kansas City's best arm for a month: five earned runs across his last four starts covering 24.2 innings, against San Francisco, Detroit, Colorado and Minnesota. His season line is 5-8 with a 3.44 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP and 112 strikeouts in 144 innings, and the changeup at 24.4 percent is his primary weapon behind a four-seamer at 27. The Royals lost 6-5 here on Monday and are without Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia on the ten-day injured list.
