Nine And A Half Units On Six Games Where The Arms Do Not Match

Daniel Lynch IV has appeared in 46 games this season and thrown 46 innings. He has started none of them. One save, thirteen holds, a 1.96 ERA assembled an inning at a time out of the Kansas City bullpen, and tonight the Royals list him as the starter against a Chicago Cubs club that has won four in a row and scored 595 runs.

Two time zones west, JT Brubaker takes the ball at Oracle Park carrying the same strange line: 34 appearances, 54 innings, zero starts. San Francisco is asking a middle reliever to open a game against a Detroit team whose pitching staff owns the fourth-best ERA in baseball.

That is the shape of the whole card. Four of tonight's six plays point at the arm the other side could not avoid running out, and the two unders are the mirror image, games where both starters are good enough that a low number should hold. Nine and a half units, six ballparks, no parlays.

Red Sox -1.5: A Rookie Left-Hander Against A Team In Free Fall

Payton Tolle turned 23 last November and has made 19 starts in his first full major league season. He is 6-6 with a 3.26 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 112 strikeouts against 29 walks in 102 innings, and opponents are hitting .227 against him. His last three turns read five and two thirds and four earned against Baltimore, five and a third and two earned against these same Athletics on July 27, and six innings and two earned against the Dodgers on August 1. The Dodgers start is the one to hold onto. Six innings, two runs, seven strikeouts against the best lineup he has seen.

Jack Perkins gets the ball for Oakland at 2-7 with a 6.66 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP, and the number underneath that is worse than the ERA suggests: 14 home runs allowed in 74.1 innings. He also faced Boston on July 27, the exact rematch of tonight, and gave up two earned across five and two thirds in a 4-2 loss.

The reason this is a run line rather than a moneyline lives in the Athletics' splits. Oakland has lost eight consecutive games and sits 1-9 over its last ten. The road offense hits .225 with a .646 OPS and has scored 213 runs in 58 games, against .264 and a .790 OPS at home. That is a different team once it leaves the ballpark, and the pitching behind it carries a 5.41 ERA, second worst in the majors behind only Colorado. Boston's staff sits at 3.49, third best, and the Red Sox have won eight straight, taking three from the White Sox at Fenway by scores of 14-2, 4-0 and 12-11.

The honest wrinkle is Fenway itself. Boston is 28-29 at home and 35-22 on the road, an inverted split for a team playing this well, and Tolle carries a 3.72 home ERA against 2.91 away from Boston. When these clubs met in Oakland eleven days ago the Red Sox won three of four, but only two of those wins came by two runs or more. A run line asks for a margin, and this matchup has not always produced one.

Rays And Mariners Under 7: Two Arms And The Second-Quietest Offense In Baseball

Drew Rasmussen has thrown 13 shutout innings across his last two starts, seven innings and one hit against Cleveland on July 26, then six innings and ten strikeouts against the White Sox on August 1. Season line: 10-5, a 2.91 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, 122 strikeouts and only 20 walks in 117.1 innings, with opponents hitting .205. Twenty walks in nearly 120 innings is the number that makes an under work, because rallies against him have to be earned with contact.

Logan Gilbert answers with a 3.46 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and 139 strikeouts in 132.2 innings. He has allowed exactly three earned runs in each of his last three starts, which is the definition of a floor without a ceiling, and he has walked 28 men all year.

The offense on the other side of Rasmussen is the real support beam. Seattle has scored 458 runs in 116 games, 3.95 per game, the second-lowest figure in baseball, and the home version is worse at the plate than the road version, hitting .224 at T-Mobile Park. Tampa Bay is a better offense on paper at 510 runs, but the road split drops to a .703 OPS across 55 games.

What argues against it deserves saying plainly. Seattle just surrendered eight runs on August 4 and eleven on August 6 to Detroit, in this same ballpark, days before this game. Gilbert's home ERA is 4.12 against 2.50 on the road, the opposite of what a home under wants. And the three meetings between these teams in July produced totals of nine, seven and ten runs, which is one push and two overs.

Guardians Moneyline: Messick's Road Number Against A 5.82

Parker Messick has allowed exactly one earned run in each of his last four starts. Six innings against Miami, five and two thirds against Minnesota, seven and two thirds against Tampa Bay, four and a third against Arizona. Four starts, four earned runs. His season line is 8-6 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP across 129.2 innings, and the away split is the sharper one: 2.20 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 61.1 road innings.

Chicago counters with Noah Schultz, who is 3-8 with a 5.82 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP and 31 walks in 65 innings. His July was ugly enough that the White Sox moved him to the bullpen on August 1, where he threw five relief innings against Tampa Bay. Before that he gave up eleven hits and five earned runs in three and two thirds against Texas on July 21 and three earned in three and a third against the Yankees on July 27.

Cleveland at -138 is a modest price for a two-and-a-half-run gap in starter ERA. That is the entire case, and it is a single unit for a reason.

Blue Jays Under 3.5: The Lowest-Scoring Club In The Sport Meets Zack Wheeler

Toronto has scored 451 runs in 116 games, 3.888 per game, the lowest rate in Major League Baseball. Not bottom five. Last. The team OPS is .678, and the road version drops to .667 across 57 games. This is the biggest position on the card at two units, and it is the one with the cleanest supporting math.

Zack Wheeler is 10-2 with a 2.49 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP and 126 strikeouts against 23 walks in 105 innings. Opponents hit .194 off him. At Citizens Bank Park he carries a 2.74 ERA across 42.2 innings. He struck out ten Tigers over six scoreless on July 12 and gave up two earned across seven innings to the Dodgers on July 21.

Toronto's recent form matches the season shape. Over its last ten games the club has been held to three runs or fewer six times, including one run against St. Louis on August 2, two at Houston on August 4 and two in a 3-2 loss at Wrigley Field on August 6. The Blue Jays also hit right-handed pitching better than left, .251 with a .696 OPS against righties versus .216 and .632 against lefties, so Wheeler being right-handed is the one small concession this play makes.

Where it can go wrong: -147 needs roughly a sixty percent hit rate to break even, and six of ten is exactly sixty percent. There is no cushion in that number. Toronto also put up five runs three separate times in that same ten-game window, and Wheeler's last outing lasted two innings against Baltimore on August 2, which leaves an open question about how deep he goes tonight. If he exits after four, the Philadelphia bullpen behind a 4.19 team ERA has to finish it.

Cubs And Tigers: The Same Bet Made Twice

Kansas City and San Francisco are both starting pitchers who have not started a game all year. Lynch has 46 relief appearances and 46 innings with a 1.96 ERA and thirteen holds, a genuinely good reliever being asked to do a job he has not done since last season. Brubaker has 34 appearances, 54 innings and a 3.17 ERA in the same role for the Giants. Neither number is bad. Both are built one inning at a time.

Chicago brings the deeper lineup at 595 runs in 116 games and a .753 OPS, with 294 of those runs coming in 57 road games. The Cubs have won four straight, taking three from the Dodgers by 10-5, 5-1 and 7-6, then beating Toronto 3-2. Kansas City is 48-68 with a 4.80 team ERA, third worst in the majors.

Detroit at Oracle Park is the same structure with a heavier stake. Keider Montero is 8-6 with a 3.17 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and a .212 opponent average, and he threw six scoreless against the Athletics on August 2 and struck out eight Cubs across five and a third with no walks on July 22. The Tigers score 4.64 runs per game on the road, 269 in 58 games, and their staff ERA of 3.53 ranks fourth in baseball. San Francisco is 48-67 with a 4.38 staff ERA, went scoreless in a 6-0 loss at Texas on August 5, and has scored 220 runs in 53 home games. These teams have not met this season.

What Can Beat This Card

Cleveland is the shakiest position on the board and it should be named first. The Guardians are 3-7 in their last ten, they just lost three straight at home to the Mets by 6-2, 6-5 and 13-6, and the road offense is a .216 average with a .652 OPS. Chicago is 34-21 at Rate Field, a genuinely strong home team. The two clubs have played seven times since June and six of those seven were one-run games. Messick can throw a very good game and still lose it.

Boston's run line carries a different flavor of risk. Laying a run and a half at Fenway with a team that is 28-29 there means the bet needs a comfortable win from a club that has mostly won tight games against Oakland. The Athletics also just lost 5-6, 2-3 and 4-5 at Cincinnati, three straight one-run defeats, which is the profile of a bad team that is still competing rather than one that has quit.

The Cubs are paying -165 while sending out the weakest starter of the six arms this card leans on. Kevin Gausman is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA, a 1.29 WHIP and a .259 opponent average, and he gave up four earned in three and a third to Tampa Bay on July 21. His last start was better, five and two thirds and one earned at St. Louis on August 1, but this price is being paid for the Chicago lineup rather than the Chicago pitching. Kansas City is 28-28 at Kauffman Stadium and scores at a .750 OPS clip there.

On Detroit, the Tigers are 26-32 away from Comerica Park despite the strong road run production, and San Francisco is a .500-ish home club at 26-27. Two units on a road favorite priced at -130 in a park that suppresses offense means the margin for a bad night is thin.

The Bottom Line

Red Sox -1.5 takes a unit and a half on Tolle's 3.26 ERA against a 6.66 and an Athletics club that has lost eight in a row while hitting .225 on the road. Rays/Mariners under 7 takes a unit and a half on Rasmussen's 13 straight shutout innings, Gilbert's 0.99 WHIP and a Seattle offense that scores 3.95 runs a game. Guardians moneyline takes a single unit on Messick's 2.20 road ERA against Schultz's 5.82. Blue Jays team total under 3.5 is the two-unit anchor, built on the lowest-scoring offense in the sport meeting a 2.49 ERA at Citizens Bank Park. Cubs moneyline takes a unit and a half and Tigers moneyline takes two, both against clubs starting relievers who have made zero starts this season.

Every one of these has a named way to lose, and four of them lose the same way: a bullpen arm goes five clean innings and the whole premise evaporates. That is the risk being priced. The reason to take it is that across a full season, the club with the better starter and the deeper lineup wins these more often than -130 and -138 imply.

For context on the run, BetLegend went 9-0 for +11.32 units on August 5 and 2-2 for +0.17 units on August 6. The season sits at 740-674-42 and negative 107.96 units, and no hot week changes that arithmetic.

Card FAQ

What are the six picks?

Boston Red Sox run line -1.5 at -130 for 1.5 units, Rays-Mariners game total under 7 at -120 for 1.5 units, Cleveland Guardians moneyline at -138 for 1 unit, Toronto Blue Jays team total under 3.5 at -147 for 2 units, Chicago Cubs moneyline at -165 for 1.5 units, and Detroit Tigers moneyline at -130 for 2 units. Nine and a half units across six games.

Why the run line instead of the Red Sox moneyline?

Oakland has lost eight straight, is 1-9 in its last ten, and hits .225 with a .646 OPS on the road against .264 and a .790 OPS at home. The staff carries a 5.41 ERA, second worst in the majors. Jack Perkins is 2-7 with a 6.66 ERA and 14 home runs allowed in 74.1 innings. Payton Tolle counters at 3.26 with 112 strikeouts in 102 innings.

Who pitches in the Rays-Mariners under?

Drew Rasmussen against Logan Gilbert at T-Mobile Park, 9:45 PM ET. Rasmussen is 10-5 with a 2.91 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and 20 walks in 117.1 innings, with 13 shutout innings across his last two starts. Gilbert is 8-6 with a 3.46 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP and 139 strikeouts in 132.2 innings. Seattle scores 3.95 runs per game, second lowest in baseball.

Why is Toronto the biggest position?

Toronto scores 3.888 runs per game, the lowest rate in the majors, with 451 runs in 116 games and a .678 team OPS that falls to .667 on the road. Zack Wheeler is 10-2 with a 2.49 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP, 126 strikeouts in 105 innings and a .194 opponent average. Toronto has been held to three runs or fewer in six of its last ten.

What connects the Cubs and Tigers moneylines?

Kansas City starts Daniel Lynch IV, who has 46 appearances and zero starts across 46 innings this season. San Francisco starts JT Brubaker, who has 34 appearances and zero starts across 54 innings. Both clubs are opening with a relief arm against a better opponent, and both prices sit at -165 or shorter.

What is the biggest risk?

Cleveland is 3-7 in its last ten and hits .216 with a .652 OPS on the road, while the White Sox are 34-21 at home and six of the seven meetings between these teams since June were one-run games. Boston is 28-29 at Fenway Park despite the eight-game winning streak, and a run line requires a two-run margin.
