Eleven And A Half Units On Six Games Decided By The Man On The Mound

Logan Webb finished the eighth inning against Detroit at Oracle Park on August 9 having allowed four hits, one walk and a single run. Six days earlier he shut out Texas over six innings with eight strikeouts. That is the arm the Colorado Rockies have to solve this afternoon by the bay, and they arrive having scored two, four, two, one and five runs in their five visits to that ballpark this season.

Fourteen runs in five games. That number is the spine of the biggest position on today's card and the reason the whole thing hangs together, because five of these six plays come back to the same question: which side has the better man on the mound, and how badly does the other side's staff need to bail him out.

Six positions, 11.5 units, spread across six of the fifteen games on Saturday's board. The honest argument against each one is written directly under it.

Rockies Team Total Under 3.5: Webb, Oracle Park, And A Lineup That Travels Badly

Colorado is two different baseball teams and the split is not subtle. At Coors Field the Rockies hit .272 with a .784 OPS and score 5.19 runs a game. Away from it they hit .238 with a .706 OPS and score 4.38, and their road record is 22-41. Nobody in the National League carries a wider gap between the version of themselves that plays at home and the one that gets on a plane.

Oracle Park has been the sharper end of that. In five games there this season the Rockies have scored 2, 4, 2, 1 and 5, which is fourteen runs total and three games at or under three. Logan Webb is the reason the ballpark keeps behaving that way. He is 7-7 with a 3.59 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and 103 strikeouts in 133 innings, with only 32 walks and nine home runs allowed all year. His home ERA is 3.58 and his home WHIP is 1.03. Over his last four starts he has given up seven earned runs across 26 innings, including the eight-inning, one-run afternoon against Detroit on August 9 and six shutout innings against Texas on August 3.

THE PLAY

Colorado Rockies TEAM TOTAL UNDER 3.5 (-138)
3.0 units | Colorado must be held to 3 runs or fewer

Now the part that argues back. Colorado scored five in this exact ballpark on Friday night and won 5-2, and the Rockies have taken three in a row. Hunter Goodman has 34 home runs and an .861 OPS, Mickey Moniak is at .267 with 19 homers, and TJ Rumfield is hitting .294. A lineup with that much slug can put four on the board in one swing plus a walk. The price also asks a lot: -138 needs to cash 58 percent of the time, which is the highest break-even on the card outside the Yankees. The bet is that the Friday result was the outlier of the five, not the new baseline, and that Webb keeps doing what he has done for eleven weeks.

Brewers And Dodgers Under 7.5: The Best Arm On The Board

Jacob Misiorowski has a 0.74 WHIP. Not for a month, for the season: 133 innings, 1.76 ERA, 204 strikeouts, 30 walks, and a .147 opponent batting average across 22 starts. No starter working today is close to that, and the two most relevant lines on his log belong to the clubs in this series and the one in the game above. He struck out twelve Rockies over five innings on July 26 while allowing one hit. He struck out ten Dodgers over seven innings of two-run ball on August 2.

The rest of the run environment supports the number. Milwaukee scores 4.62 a game on the road and has 45 home runs in 60 road games, the lowest road power output of any club in this series. Los Angeles averages 4.43 at Dodger Stadium against 5.53 away from it, one of the stranger home splits in the league. The first two games of this series landed on nine runs and four.

THE PLAY

Brewers / Dodgers UNDER 7.5 (-115)
1.5 units | 7 total runs or fewer at Dodger Stadium

Justin Wrobleski is the crack. His season looks fine at 11-4 with a 3.44 ERA, but the last two starts read 4.1 innings and seven earned against the Cubs on August 3, then 3.1 innings and three earned against Arizona on August 9. Ten earned runs in seven and two-thirds innings from the man who has to match Misiorowski means the Dodgers bullpen inherits the middle innings, and a Milwaukee lineup with Brice Turang at 76 RBI and Jake Bauers at an .871 OPS is capable of turning that into five runs by itself. The under needs 53.5 percent at -115, and the whole case is that the best pitcher on the slate erases one half of the scoreboard entirely.

Tigers Moneyline: Twenty Innings Without An Earned Run

Troy Melton has made thirteen starts and the last three of them produced zero earned runs. Seven innings against Baltimore on July 28, seven against Seattle on August 4, six against San Francisco on August 9. That is twenty consecutive innings without an earned run from a rookie sitting at 7-1 with a 1.46 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP and a .171 opponent average. Detroit's staff as a whole holds a 3.52 team ERA and a .231 average against, and the Tigers are 60-62 mostly because the offense has been ordinary rather than because anybody pitches badly.

Anthony Kay answers for Chicago at 9-5 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and a .255 opponent average, with 43 walks in 116 innings. He has been steady lately, six innings and two earned against Cleveland on August 8, but steady is a long way from what Melton has been doing. The White Sox strike out more than any club in this game, 1,102 times on the year, against a starter holding hitters to .171.

THE PLAY

Detroit Tigers MONEYLINE (-134)
1.5 units | Tigers to win outright at Comerica Park

Chicago walked into Comerica on Friday and won 9-5, which is the whole counterargument in one line. The White Sox lead the season series 4-3, they have hit 161 home runs, and Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery have 80 between them. A boom-or-bust lineup that just scored nine is exactly the profile that beats a 1.46 ERA in a single afternoon. Detroit is also 32-29 at home and nothing more, which is why the price is only -134 for a pitcher this good.

Yankees Moneyline: Schlittler Against A Bullpen Game

Cam Schlittler is 10-6 with a 2.21 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and 182 strikeouts in 146.2 innings, and he has walked 31 hitters all season against a .196 opponent average. His August 9 start against Atlanta was seven innings, one run, eleven strikeouts, zero walks. His July 24 start against Philadelphia was seven and a third, no runs, twelve strikeouts, zero walks. The one blemish inside the last month came in St. Louis on August 3, three innings and four earned with five walks, which is the only time all year the command left him.

Toronto's answer is a bullpen game with a label on it. Braydon Fisher has seven starts on his record, and his last four of them lasted 1, 1.1, 1 and 1.1 innings. He is an opener, and behind him the Blue Jays hand five or six innings to a relief corps that has thrown more innings than almost anyone in the American League. Toronto also scores 3.83 runs a game at Rogers Centre, the lowest home figure of any team playing today, with a .688 home OPS.

THE PLAY

New York Yankees MONEYLINE (-166)
2.0 units | Yankees to win outright in Toronto

The Blue Jays have won seven of their last ten and took Friday's opener 3-1, so the shape of this argument has already failed once this week. New York hits .228 with a .690 OPS on the road, the lineup goes quiet for days at a time, and -166 requires 62.4 percent, the steepest ask on the card. The bet is on the widest starting-pitching gap of the day and on a Yankees staff carrying a 3.27 team ERA, the best mark of any club in action.

Rangers Moneyline: Gore's Quiet Month Against A 5.48 Staff

The Athletics have allowed 192 home runs and carry a 5.48 team ERA with a 1.50 WHIP, the worst combination of any club playing Saturday. Their home record is 22-39. J.T. Ginn has been the exception, 8-6 with a 3.41 ERA, though his 53 walks in 121.1 innings and a 1.45 WHIP at home tell you the traffic is constant even when the runs are not.

MacKenzie Gore's season ERA of 4.43 undersells where he is right now. Across his last four starts he has allowed seven earned runs in 23.1 innings, with 27 strikeouts and seven walks: three earned against Seattle, three against Tampa Bay, none against San Francisco, one against the Dodgers on August 10 with nine strikeouts in five and a third. He has 149 strikeouts in 134 innings and a .229 opponent average.

THE PLAY

Texas Rangers MONEYLINE (-141)
2.0 units | Rangers to win outright at Sutter Health Park

Texas has lost four in a row, including 8-3 to these Athletics on Friday, and has scored zero and three runs in the last two games. The Rangers average 4.02 on the road and hit .240 there. Sacramento has also been the Athletics' best asset all year: they hit .263 with a .789 OPS and score 5.03 runs a game at home against .223 and 3.69 on the road. Backing a road favorite that just lost four straight into a hitter-friendly park is the least comfortable position on this card, and it is sized at two units because the pitching edge and the 5.48 staff ERA on the other side are both real.

Red Sox Team Total Over 3.5: The One Bet Against A Pitcher

Everything above leans on a starter being good. This one leans on a starter being wrong. Jared Jones has a 5.82 ERA at PNC Park, a 5.03 ERA for the season, and ten home runs allowed in 59 innings. His last start was three innings and eight earned runs against the Mets on August 9. The start before that was four innings and three earned against Milwaukee. Pittsburgh's bullpen behind him has a 4.32 team ERA and only 24 saves, the fewest of any club in action today.

Boston is the better road team than home team, 36-26 away from Fenway with 4.58 runs a game and 68 home runs on the road against 54 at home. Willson Contreras is hitting .281 with a .917 OPS and 24 home runs, Wilyer Abreu has 21 homers and a .794 OPS, and Ceddanne Rafaela is at .288. The Red Sox scored four at PNC Park on Friday, which is exactly the number this bet needs.

THE PLAY

Boston Red Sox TEAM TOTAL OVER 3.5 (-147)
1.5 units | Boston must score 4 runs or more

The case against starts with the price. At -147 this needs 59.5 percent, and Boston has scored three or fewer in five of its last ten. Jarren Duran is hitting .202, the team average sits at .248, and Jones has held hitters to a .206 average at home even while the ERA there sits near six, which is the signature of a pitcher who gets hit hard rather than often. One clean five-inning outing from him and this loses without ever feeling close.

What Can Beat This Card

The plainest threat is that four of six positions ask a road team or a road lineup to control the game, and Friday night went the other way in every one of them. Colorado scored five at Oracle. Chicago won 9-5 in Detroit. Toronto beat New York 3-1. The Athletics beat Texas 8-3. Boston did cash its number at PNC, and the Dodgers did hold Milwaukee to one run, but a card built on Saturday reversals of Friday results deserves that stated plainly rather than buried.

The second risk is concentration. Three of the six plays sit on starters with fewer than 150 innings this season in Melton, Schlittler and Misiorowski, and young arms in mid-August are exactly where workload catches up. Melton has thrown 80 innings across thirteen starts, Misiorowski 133 across 22. A five-inning night from any of them turns a pitching-edge bet into a bullpen bet, and the Tigers, Yankees and Brewers relief corps are all being asked to cover more than usual this weekend.

The third is the Rockies position itself, at three units the heaviest of the day. Team totals move on one swing, and Colorado has a 34-home-run bat in the middle of the order. The reason it is still the anchor is that the road version of this lineup has been genuinely quiet all season and it is walking into the one pitcher on the schedule least likely to hand out free baserunners.
