LAFC @ LA Galaxy
Friday, 10:25 PM ET | Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA
The Galaxy have played fifteen matches this season and finished with a 5-5-5 record: five wins, five draws, five losses. They have scored 22 goals and conceded 22. A goal difference of exactly zero. You could not build a more literal picture of a team that has decided nothing about itself, and it sits ninth in the Western Conference on 20 points.
LAFC arrive as the better side and not by a landslide. They are 7-3-5 across their own fifteen matches, fifth in the West on 24 points, with 24 goals scored and 17 conceded for a plus-seven difference. Four points and four places separate them from their neighbours, which in a derby is another way of saying nothing separates them.
El Trafico has never especially cared about the table, and this is the version of the fixture where it matters least. The Galaxy's problem is legible in the numbers: a defence that has conceded as often as the attack has delivered. LAFC's edge is that they concede seven fewer goals across the same number of games. In a derby that historically refuses to stay tidy, the side that has been harder to score against is the side with the better argument, and it kicks off after ten o'clock on the East Coast for anyone still awake.
