Sixteen Games, Sale At 2.06 Against Sanchez At 2.52, And A Doubleheader In Cleveland

Two games are played here today and this is the first of them. Cleveland is 70-70 with a 3.74 staff ERA and 577 runs allowed, and the lineup is the problem rather than the pitching: 566 runs on a .685 OPS, the second lowest scoring club on the whole board. Detroit is 64-75, scores 610 on a .712 OPS and pitches to a 3.70 ERA, which is marginally the better staff figure of the two.

Keider Montero has been the quiet story of the Detroit rotation. 22 starts, 139 innings, a 3.24 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP and a .208 opponent average, on 92 strikeouts against 31 walks. That is a low strikeout profile, 5.96 per nine, holding a sub 1.00 WHIP, which means the contact he allows is weak rather than absent.

Logan Allen takes the ball for Cleveland with one start and 14.1 innings on his 2026 line, a 3.77 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. There is no season sample to read here and the number that matters is how deep he gets, because a Guardians bullpen carrying six innings twice in one day is a different unit by the nightcap.

Same two clubs, same ballpark, five hours later, and both starters change. This is the game most commonly confused with the first one, and the two are priced separately for good reason.

Foster Griffin is the better arm on the board here. 22 starts, 129.1 innings, a 3.06 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 116 strikeouts against 30 walks. The one blemish is 19 home runs allowed in 129 innings, 1.32 per nine, which is a lot for a man with that ERA and is the mechanism by which his good starts turn into bad ones.

Andrew Sears answers with 6.2 major league innings, no starts, a 6.75 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Detroit is effectively opening this game. Against a Cleveland lineup that scores 4.04 runs a game, the two bullpens will decide most of it.

Milwaukee is 87-54, the best record in the sport, and the profile behind it is balanced rather than lopsided: 705 runs scored on a .738 OPS and 534 allowed on a 3.47 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. Cincinnati is 67-73 with a 4.64 staff ERA and a 1.42 WHIP, the fourth worst run prevention on tonight’s board.

Shane Drohan starts for Milwaukee at a 3.75 ERA over 16 starts and 110.1 innings, with 110 strikeouts against 37 walks and a 1.30 WHIP. Nine per nine in strikeouts is a genuine bat missing profile, and the walk rate is what keeps it from being better than the ERA suggests.

Rhett Lowder has had a hard season: 21 starts, 112 innings, a 5.14 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP, 43 walks against 88 strikeouts and 16 home runs allowed. Great American is the least forgiving park on this board for a man with that home run rate.

The Angels are 53-87, the worst record on tonight’s board, scoring 571 runs on a .680 OPS and allowing 651 on a 4.27 ERA. Pittsburgh at 69-72 is the better club on both sides of the ball, 691 runs on a .734 OPS against a 4.22 ERA.

Ryan Johnson starts for Los Angeles at a 5.47 ERA over 14 starts and 72.1 innings with a 1.42 WHIP. The walk number is the tell: 36 in 72 innings, 4.48 per nine, against 52 strikeouts. A five inning starter who walks four and a half a game hands the game to a bullpen that has already thrown a lot of innings this year.

Jared Jones answers with a 4.83 ERA over 16 starts and 72.2 innings, but the underlying rate is much better than the ERA: 10.28 strikeouts per nine and a 1.28 WHIP with a .236 opponent average. He averages under five innings a start, which is where the gap between his rate and his results lives.

Boston is 76-65 with the highest team OPS of any club playing tonight at .731, 633 runs scored, and a 3.67 staff ERA behind it. Baltimore is 69-72, scores 640 on a .713 OPS, and allows 661 runs on a 4.18 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP, which is the second worst run prevention figure on this board behind the Athletics.

Ranger Suarez starts for Boston at a 3.64 ERA across 24 starts and 123.2 innings with a 1.24 WHIP, 119 strikeouts, 39 walks and only eight home runs allowed. Home run suppression is the single most useful trait a pitcher can bring to Camden Yards and he has it.

Shane Baz counters at a 4.01 ERA over 27 starts and 157 innings. The walks are the problem: 55 in 157 innings alongside a 1.35 WHIP and a .263 opponent average. Against the best on base club on the board, that is the number that decides how long the outing lasts.

San Francisco is 58-83 and New York is 63-77, and neither is playing for anything except the arms on the mound. The Giants score 586 on a .713 OPS and allow 659 on a 4.38 ERA. The Mets score 577 on a .695 OPS behind a 4.09 ERA.

Nolan McLean is the reason to watch this one. 27 starts, 155.2 innings, a 3.06 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP, 172 strikeouts and a .203 opponent average, the second lowest on the entire board. The 61 walks are the only blemish on an otherwise excellent line.

Matt Wilkinson starts for San Francisco with three starts and 11.2 innings, a 4.63 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Six strikeouts in that stretch. There is nothing to read in the sample and the Giants bullpen is the real opponent for the Mets lineup tonight.

The Cubs lead every offensive column on this board: 753 runs on a .770 OPS at 79-62. Miami is 71-70, a genuinely improved club, scoring 615 on a .725 OPS behind a 3.96 staff ERA and a 1.25 WHIP.

Shota Imanaga starts for Chicago at a 4.01 ERA over 27 starts and 150.1 innings with a 1.14 WHIP. The WHIP and the ERA disagree and the reason is in the last column: 33 home runs allowed, 1.98 per nine, the highest total of any starter working tonight. He does not put men on base and he does give up the ball in the air.

Janson Junk answers with a 4.11 ERA over 20 starts and 103 innings, a 1.30 WHIP and a .266 opponent average. He strikes out 6.12 per nine, so this is a contact profile pitching in a park that rewards it, against the one lineup on the board that punishes contact pitchers hardest.

Chicago at 73-67 is above .500 and Minnesota at 67-73 is not, and the offensive numbers are nearly identical: 662 runs on a .724 OPS for the White Sox against 658 on a .729 for the Twins. The separation is the pitching. Chicago allows 623 on a 4.14 ERA, Minnesota allows 696 on a 4.63, the third worst on the board.

Zebby Matthews starts for Minnesota at a 4.58 ERA over 19 starts and 112 innings with a 1.26 WHIP. He strikes out 7.47 per nine and has allowed 19 home runs, 1.53 per nine, which is a hard combination to carry into this park.

Erick Fedde has 13 starts on a line covering 123.1 innings and a 4.16 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP. The walks, 45 against 88 strikeouts, and 22 home runs allowed are the two figures that keep an otherwise ordinary ERA from being better.

Tampa Bay is 83-57 with the lowest team WHIP on this board at 1.15, 583 runs allowed on a 3.79 ERA, and 628 scored on a .730 OPS. Texas is 70-71, scores 578 on a .716 and allows 620 on a 4.27 ERA.

Nick Martinez starts for the Rays at a 2.99 ERA over 26 starts and 153.2 innings with a 1.10 WHIP and only 22 walks all season, 1.29 per nine. The strikeout rate is low at 5.33 per nine and the command is elite, which is a profile that lives or dies on the 18 home runs he has allowed.

Trevor Williams is listed for Texas with 1.1 major league innings this season. There is no line to read. This is an opener or a staff game, and the Rangers relief corps is being asked to cover most of nine innings against the better club.

Arizona is 74-67 and Houston is 72-69, two clubs still in it, and both are handing the ball to a starter having a difficult year. The Diamondbacks allow 629 runs on a 4.16 ERA. Houston allows 677 on a 4.56.

Merrill Kelly starts for Arizona at a 5.08 ERA across 25 starts and 141.2 innings with a 1.48 WHIP. The walk total tells the story: 64 in 141 innings against 95 strikeouts, and 26 home runs allowed. That is a command pitcher whose command has gone.

Cristian Javier is worse on a shorter sample: eight starts, 44.2 innings, a 6.45 ERA with a 1.63 WHIP and a .297 opponent average. He still misses bats at 8.46 per nine. Nothing about either line suggests a low scoring evening.

Toronto at 70-71 has the quieter profile of the two: 566 runs scored on a .689 OPS, tied for the lowest total on this board, behind a 3.92 staff ERA. Kansas City is 63-78, scores 606 on a .719, and allows 691 runs on a 4.71 ERA, the worst mark of any club playing tonight except the Athletics and the Rockies.

Jameson Taillon has two starts and eight innings on his 2026 line at a 3.38 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. His full season rate figures come from a longer body of work than this season shows, and the eight inning sample is not something to lean on.

Daniel Lynch IV has five starts inside 61.2 innings and a 3.06 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP and a .202 opponent average, the lowest on the board. Five starts is thin and the rate is real: 46 strikeouts, 19 walks, five home runs allowed in 61 innings.

Colorado is 54-86 and allows 795 runs on a 5.42 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP, the worst pitching figures in the National League. The lineup is not the problem: 655 runs on a .738 OPS is the fourth best offensive line on this board, and it is a Coors number rather than a Colorado one. St. Louis is 70-71, scores 633 on a .700 OPS and allows 642 on a 4.24 ERA.

Andre Pallante starts for the Cardinals at a 3.57 ERA over 24 starts and 136 innings with a 1.24 WHIP, 97 strikeouts and only ten home runs allowed, 0.66 per nine. A ground ball pitcher with that home run rate is the profile that travels best to Denver, and it is still Denver.

Ryan Feltner answers at a 5.84 ERA over 20 starts and 101.2 innings with a 1.55 WHIP, 45 walks and a .281 opponent average. Nineteen home runs in 101 innings is 1.68 per nine.

Washington is 67-75 and has the best offensive line of any losing club in baseball: 735 runs on a .754 OPS. It has also allowed 721 on a 4.69 ERA, which is how a lineup that good sits eight games under. Los Angeles is 83-57 with 687 runs on a .757 OPS and 540 allowed on a 3.70 ERA.

Blake Snell has made five starts in 26 innings with a 2.42 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, 36 strikeouts and no home runs allowed on a .170 opponent average. That is a 12.46 per nine strikeout rate and it is five starts, so it is a rate rather than a record.

Jackson Kent counters with four starts, 19.1 innings, a 5.59 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP built on 15 walks in 19 innings. Against the second best OPS on the board that is the number that ends the outing early.

The Athletics are 55-86 and have allowed 809 runs on a 5.44 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP, the worst run prevention figures in Major League Baseball by a clear margin. Their lineup is not the issue at 618 runs on a .725 OPS. Seattle is 66-75 and the mirror image: a 4.20 staff ERA and a 1.26 WHIP against 559 runs scored on a .686 OPS, the lowest run total of any club on this board.

Logan Gilbert starts for Seattle at a 3.42 ERA over 27 starts and 160.1 innings with a 1.04 WHIP, 166 strikeouts against 40 walks and a .215 opponent average. The one soft spot is 22 home runs allowed in 160 innings.

Kade Morris has one start and 14.2 innings on his line: a 9.82 ERA, a 2.11 WHIP and a .385 opponent average, with four home runs allowed in those 14 innings. There is no sample worth defending and the Athletics bullpen behind him is the unit that has already allowed more runs than any other in the sport.
