The Sharks head into Montreal tonight as a significant underdog at +180, and that is exactly the kind of number that catches my eye. San Jose sits at 32-26-6 on the season, firmly in the wild card conversation and playing meaningful hockey for the first time in years. Montreal at 36-19-10 is a strong team at home with an 18-12-2 record at the Bell Centre, but there is a lot more to this matchup than the standings suggest. The Sharks are not the punching bag they used to be. This is a team that went into Montreal on March 3 and dropped a 7-5 shootout, proving they can absolutely hang with the Canadiens in their own building. And now they bring Macklin Celebrini back from the Olympics, where the kid led Team Canada with five goals in six games and looked like a man among boys on the international stage. That kind of confidence and momentum does not just evaporate when you put on a different sweater.
Celebrini has been the engine that drives everything for San Jose this season, and the return of their franchise center from Milan is a massive boost. Before the Olympic break, he was putting up points at a pace that had him in the Calder Trophy conversation all season long. His new linemate combination gives the Sharks a legitimate top-six that can compete with anybody, and with the wild card race tightening by the day, every game carries playoff intensity for this group. The Canadiens are a good team, no doubt about it, but they are also coming off a stretch where they have been inconsistent at home. San Jose's 15-16-1 road record is not spectacular, but it tells you they are competitive away from the SAP Center more often than not. At +180, you are getting nearly 2-to-1 on a team that is fighting for its playoff life, has its best player riding an Olympic high, and already showed it can score at will in this building less than two weeks ago. The moneyline at 1 unit is the value swing, and the +1.5 puck line at -140 for 3 units is the high-conviction play that gives you the safety net even in a tight loss. The Sharks keep this one close at worst and have the firepower to outright steal it.
The Picks
San Jose Sharks +180 (1 Unit)
San Jose Sharks +1.5 -140 (3 Units)
