MLB First-Half Recap 2026: Dodgers and Brewers Set the Pace as the All-Star Break Arrives

We made it to the break, and what a first half it has been. The 2026 season hits its pause with the All-Star Game set for Tuesday, July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, and the story so far is one of a few juggernauts pulling away while a handful of surprise clubs crash the party. If you have been betting this season, you already know the market has had to keep recalculating, because a couple of these teams look better than anyone projected in March.
Start at the top, because the Los Angeles Dodgers are right where you would expect them. The defending champions sit at 61-36, the best record in all of baseball, and they are running away with the NL West despite a bumpy stretch heading into the break. Winning it all in 2025 clearly did not take the hunger away. The scary part for the rest of the National League is that Los Angeles has done this without everything clicking at once. When it does, they are the team to beat in October all over again.
The team pushing them hardest has been a genuine surprise. The Milwaukee Brewers are 59-37 and have turned the NL Central into their own personal playground. The engine is a young pitching staff that has been flat out dominant. Jacob Misiorowski has been the story of the first half on the mound, leading the majors in ERA at 1.62 while also topping the league in strikeouts with 167. Aaron Ashby has piled up a big league best 12 wins. Small market, huge results, and a rotation nobody wants to see in a short series.
In the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays own the best record at 56-37 and have controlled the AL East from wire to wire. Behind them, the biggest shock of the entire first half lives on the South Side of Chicago. The White Sox sit at 49-45 and lead the AL Central, a stunning turnaround for a franchise that has spent the last few years near the bottom. Colson Montgomery, Munetaka Murakami, and Miguel Vargas have given Chicago real energy, and suddenly a division nobody wanted is theirs to lose. The Texas Rangers, at 49-47, have inched to the front of a bunched AL West.
The Atlanta Braves have handled the NL East, sitting at 54-40 with the Philadelphia Phillies right in the mix at 53-43 and hosting the Midsummer Classic in their own ballpark. The wild card races are going to be a grind. In the National League, the Chicago Cubs have been one of the best teams in the league and are firmly in the picture alongside Philadelphia and the Miami Marlins. In the American League, the New York Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, and Seattle Mariners are all fighting for October position, and none of them can breathe easy yet.
Individually, the bats have put on a show. Kyle Schwarber leads the majors with 32 home runs and gets to headline the All-Star festivities in his home park, while Yordan Alvarez paces the AL with 31 blasts and a league best 70 RBI. Otto Lopez has been a revelation in Miami, hitting .334 to lead the National League, with Yandy Diaz topping the AL at .322. Jordan Walker has driven in a National League best 74 runs in St. Louis. On the mound beyond Misiorowski, Cam Schlittler has been electric for the Yankees at a 2.05 ERA, Zack Wheeler keeps rolling at 9-1 with a 2.28 ERA, and reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal has battled through a 5-4 first half for a Tigers club that has badly underachieved.
Not every story has been a happy one. The Detroit Tigers came in as the AL Central favorite and instead sit under .500 at 44-51, the biggest disappointment of the first half. The New York Yankees have had to survive without Aaron Judge for a stretch after a rib injury sidelined their MVP bat. And the Toronto Blue Jays, who took the Dodgers to seven games in last year's World Series, have limped to 45-50 with George Springer and the offense searching for last season's form. That is the beauty of a long season though. There is a full second half to fix it.
